oh yes krys, i dont doubt that he knew kung fun, im just saying, i dont think there are schools that teach southern mantis in china, i seriously doubt your gonna find one in the philippines. that guy would have had to come to america or israel to learn southern mantis. there arent too many (if any) southern mantis masters in china either, so i would think there are even less in the philippines.

ok, well, thats cool. i had no idea there were so many styles of kung fu available in the philippines, although if there are so many here in america, i suppose i shouldnt be surprised.

Wing Chun has also circular footwork, back triangular footwork too. If you have to step back (which means you are in trouble), use triangular footwork.
Arnis (what you call kali) has not only triangular footwork, this is very common among many styles... but there are a few who use different patterns.
Yes, Wing Chun has it...but it doesn't drill it as extensively, or as in as many variations as Southern Mantis, or Kali. WC has the upright and reverse triangle, but WC doesn't practice stepping drills with patterns like the star of david or the eight patterned star. Some stylists like to say "we have this too", but the manner in which it is trained can be vastly different.
that time the last grandmaster, and the current GM henry poo yee were in america, where they set up schools.
Without getting into politics, I've always belonged to the faction of people who concede that Gin Foon Mark is the current GM of S. Mantis.

Thanx SOCOM, however, the kickboxing/boxing/grappling/wrestling class is all one class; it teaches boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and grappling. Granted, other stuff can be better, but that kinda stuff forms the basis of fighting in my opinion.
Yes, Capoeira was developed by Brazilian slaves as a means for fighting. The problem is the only decent school for it around here is in Buffalo, which is far for me; the other one is supposed to be pretty good in terms of teaching you acrobatics, but it teaches the dance kind of Capoeira, not the fighting type of Capoeira. I would like to learn both.

hey, mr gordo, i talked to my sifu, and apparently there is some kinda internal mantis civil war going on. 3 factions, henry poo yee, gin foon mark, and some other guy no one takes seriously. i myself belong to the yee faction, as far as i belong to one. i just prefer to train kung fu, and ignore the politics.
although we could solve it the old way and have yee and mark fight it out...............

Hi Socomsa, I know your young and a student of Mr. Chell's, and I suppose that you were just trying to be funny when you made the statement about letting Mr. Yee and Mr. Mark fight it out. Both of these teachers are well up in years so what purpose would it serve? I'm interested as to how you blance your time between Mantis and Tai-Chi? What is missing from your mantis training that you feel it needs to be supplemented by Tai-Chi? Does your Mantis lack a chi-kung exercise? I'd like to hear your thought's on these things if you can find the time to reply. Thanks in advance!

yea, well, first off, i am young, almost 16. and i train under russel chell. do you by any chance know him? just the way you called him "Mr Chell" it sounded like you knew him.
anyway, no, a fight between yee and mark would serve no purpose, (other than 2 of the greatest fighters of our time going at it, its like the beatles and the stones in a band contest). besides, it would not only be illegal, but i wouldnt be surprised if one of them got hurt, or killed. i was joking, but maybe it wasnt all that funny.
umm, as i am young, im also relativly inexperienced at both martial arts, only about a year in each, which means i dont have too much to practice. mantis has short forms, like som bo jin, which is pretty short, and the tai chi 13 move and saber forms, which are both short as well. i generally practice somthing from tai chi, the 13 move form, do some mantis excercises and then the forms, and then close with the tai chi saber form. somwhere in there i do a staff form.
mantis doesnt lack anything, it has alot of chi kung and power, but i find taking both systems gives me a different perspective into the martial arts, and i also find that while neither system lacks anything (except ground fighting, but hopefully you wont get into that situation anyway) they both complement each other. there are some moves that are good, but combine it with a move from another system, and you get somthing better. you know what i mean?
what style of martial arts do you take?
oh, also, mr gordo, that name doesnt ring a bell, but i forget what the guys name is. im pretty sure nobody pays attention to him. he is the ralph nader of mantis.

Thanks for the reply Socomsa. Actually, i'm hoping to make your teachers seminar this weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting him again. I doubt that he would remember me after all the years. Will you be going? I don't really know to much about southern mantis or tai-chi. I studied Northern 7-Star Mantis a while back for about two years, but had to quit due to a health problem. I've been told that it doesnt look anything like southern mantis. Do you find yourself having any problems trying to learn two systems at the same time? I always had enough trouble with just one myself. And the weapon forms sound like they would be even more confusing to me.

your going to the seminar? i am definitly going, my name is nat chase. look for me, ask russ about me. how do you know russ? and i assume your aware that henry poo yee is teaching the seminar, which means your gonna want to be there early. so yea, how do you know russ, how did you know about the seminar, and where do you live?
speaking of which, whats your name, russ talks somtimes about people he knew, i might recognize your name.
well, as far as i know 7 star doesnt look anything like southern, but i dont have much (any) experience in 7 star. its not too hard to learn 2 martial arts at once, primarily becasue tai chi, which is slow, relaxing, gentle and flowing, is so much different form mantis, which is hard, choppy, and uncomfortable, its like taking a math and a history class at once. they are so different its hardly like you are learning the same thing (being martial arts). i only take 2 weapons forms, 9 province eyebrow height staff, and yang style saber, and its really not too hard to manage them, because they are so different, and because they are very basic.
of course, i consider myself a nerd, if you will, when it comes to martial arts. other stuff, like school, is important to me, but martial arts are basicly the entirety of my life.
i suppose its like people who play 5 different instruments, or know 3 languages.
hey, since henry poo yee is gonna be there, let me know if you have any questions regarding etiquite (i dont know if i spelled that right, but regardless, its important to know what to do and everything, especially sinse yee is......different. russ briefed us all on the proper etiquite, and theres alot of stuff. i know im gonna mess up somwhere and hes gonna kill me.)
one thing i will tell you ohwever, and you might know this if youve talked to russ, but one important thing, is not to ask many questions. if you have questions, ask russ during the break, but russ suggests that everybody limits themselves to 1 question for yee per day.
but anyway, let me know, and ask any questions you have, and i look foreward to seeing you there.

And yes, it was funny. Let's lighten up folks.
I'd also like to add that practicing Tai Chi and S. Mantis together may hinder your progress in mantis. The fighting methodologies and theories don't exactly gel together. My Ba Gua teacher also told me that the chi kung for shaolin and taoist internal styles are very different, and one should focus on one at a time when learning. Hey man, you're 16, even if you spent the next 10 years doing mantis, you got plenty of time to learn tai chi or other Wu Dong styles later if you want to. I will say this, studying boxing or kali while training mantis will supercharge your mantis hands big time.
