  • San Shou in SWPA?

I definitely would like to check out SS in person, but I haven't been able to find anyplace nearby that offers it. Anybody know of one in the SWPA area?

Dude, I'm wondering, why don't you just stick with one art? You had like 10 styles listed in your sig.

That was just stuff I tried and either didn't like or couldn't stick with due to moving around in the military. I'm strictly a student of the Bujinkan now, but I still like to compete and I think san shou would be fun as hell. I'm just looking for tournaments that I can sign up in, I already have most of the skills you'll probably need, save some sparring time with one of those guys and the rules.

Why would you stick with only one style? How would you know which style is best for you if you dont check them out? You dont have to devote your life to every new style, but you should at least be familiar with them. \

There seem to be a couple places in Chicago.
        Heres another one.

Dont know exactly where you live...but here's where I'd go If I really wanted to learn San Shou in this area

The site above shows the instructor, Master Li, doing a seminar at this school

        Which is in Norristown, PA

Here's just part of Master Li's resume
Li Pei Yun moved to the United States from China in April 1997. Since coming to the United States, Master Li competed in a number of large tournaments. A few of his most notable tournament accomplishments in the U.S. are:

        · 2001 Overall Grand Champion – NASKA

        · 2001 World Champion – Weapons and Forms – NBL

        · 2001 Sport Karate, Master Li was featured on ESPN

        · 2000 Overall Grand Champion – North America Karate Association

        · 2000 World Champion – Weapons and Forms – NBL

        · 2000 World Champion – Weapons and Forms – World Karate Association of England

        · 1997 Grand Champion, Men’s Kung Fu Division (NASKA) USA national Tournament (featured on pay-per-view; video clip available on request).

        · 1997 Modern Wushu Forms Grand Champion, Men’s Division - United World Kung-Fu/Wushu Championships, Orlando. In this competition, Master Li also won:

1st Place Adult Men Advanced Open Weapons

1st Place Adult Men Advanced Broadsword

1st Place Adult Men Advanced staff

1st Place Adult Men Advanced Taiji Jien Sword

        · 1997 Grand Champion, Men’s Weapon Division CoreStates 11th American Karate Cup, USA

Thanks for the help, HT, but the closest is the Norristown and that's like 6 hours.

It sure would be a pleasure though to study with Master Li at http://www.lipeiyun.com/school.html
If you go to the site, they have videos and everything. They dont have a lot of bandwidth, so it's better to download them first before watching them. If you cant find anyplace else, it would be a nice little vacation. I bet there's a lot to be learned with him as a teacher.

Akron may be your best bet. I dont think there are any schools in West Virginia, and Southwestern PA, is cow-country. Seems like San shou is spreading, mainly in the East. I've looked for a while under different organizations and havent found anything. It's possible that there may be someone just teaching San Shou, but it may not be enough to get you into a tourny. Best wishes

I might call those ones you gave me and see if they know anyone, the old network style. Thanks HT!

San Shou is about fighting, you can talk about it all you want... but where are your fighters?

"Master Li", where are his fighters? He's been in the US since 1997 and I've never seen ONE guy from "Master Li" fight...

He's got a nice list of pretty forms titles though, doesn't he?

I hate to bring back a dead thread but i'm bored @ work. As a former top forms competitor - I hate to say this but people who are grandchampions or even great master w/students who are top competitors in FORMS/WEAPONS/POINT SPARRING - are NOT SanShou fighters in any aspect. I hate when people who do forms say that they can do this and that to so and so in a fight. Its soo stupid. Do only way to prove that is doing it in the ring.

Okay sorry - I just have a pet peeve about forms people thinking that their fighters.
