    There are different kinds of strength: Absolute strength, limit strength, speed strength, starting strength, etc. Most people think of absolute strength, how much weight an unaided person can lift.

    I'd also like to point out that when an olympic lifter lifts several hundred pounds it's done ballistically. They have a lot of speed strength and I've heard of 300 pound guys who can slam dunk a basketball.
