funny thing, more people in the UK die in bathtubs and falling down stairs than in the USA from guns ...no wonder they dont let them have guns....so maybe al queada should build staircases and bathtubs instead of guns and bombs.....

You got to be kidding for the oens to say yes to a mvoe has every counter. Not everythign has a counter, how can you say they do when all of this relays on skills and the way it is executed by the person. Some people prefer their sidekicks to completly extend some like sweet and sexy sidekicks. The matter of the fact is, dont think you can coutner everything, if you fight enough which i hope you do, you'll know what i am talking about. Then if you call a counter a shot to the body that is hard and doesnt do much if any damage to the perosn then I guess it could be a counter. But yeah there are alot of factors to take into account with countering, your speed, how much damage was inflicted on you(enough to knock you back or to the ground who knows) and others you guys can figure out.

I also agree with this because if your school is weak and taps each other with turtle like speed i guess a counter is in suit.

This is in reference to a Gracie training video I saw that I believe why every movement has a counter. The reason why some things have no counters is not because there are no counters, its because we are not educated in countering such a move.To back up such a claim i use the reference of the Daoist yin yang, which all Daoist base MA would reflect on such theories. The yinyang are based on 2 extremes that interact harmoniously with each other; therefore an absolute attack must have an absolute defence.

Hit the nail on the head Shard. There are generally several defenses or counters to each move. Your defense can be pre-emptive (anticipation and position change), on time (a block or stall), or late (last ditch saving effort if you have failed at the others). My BJJ instructor does a great job of classifying different defenses and counters he teaches us into those 3 categories. If you fail at these and some guy sinks a guillotine or extends your arm in an arm-bar, it's too late and you are usually done for. Same goes for getting punched in the face...

As far as the knife debate, I agree with Tant01 (and I am sorry you and your friend ever had to be stationed at MILPERS Millington, yuck). My knife has on more then one occasion detered an opponent from pursuing the issue. I have never started a fight, ever, but I have had the unfortunate experience of being an intended victim. Let me tell you, when that knife came out from the small of my back, it was a quick decision by the aggressor that there was easier prey elsewhere... That for me is reason enough to never leave mine at home unless I am going somewhere it is not allowed. If it came to it, would I use it. If someone attacked, sure would. Would I regret it... maybe... would I be alive to regret it, more likely then I would if I didn't carry.

I don't believe by any means that my martial skill (I am a 5th Dan in Aiki-Jiu-Jitsu and a Blue Belt in BJJ, I also have 3 years of training in Boxing and MT) would save me from a skilled opponent with a knife, and unless I was sure I would be hurt regardless of my cooperation and/or my family was in danger I would cooperate without question.

Hey Jordan...Nice to see a new face and fresh input. There are only small handfull of tools in my box, one of them is a knife, sometimes two of them are knives.

It seems like the aiki jutsu types would have a grip on Tsukiwaza? Taisabaki? and some weapons form(s)?

The weapons forms are less prevalent these days I think, but the base concepts (Tsukiwaza, Taisabaki) of striking and movement that stem from the Aikijujutsu (or Daito-Ryu if you want to go all the way back) tree are still there and as effective as they were before. Especially in the realm of self-defense... same as before though, I would hope to never have to use them in a reality situation unless presented with no other option...
