I think a dangerous myth some MA teachers have taught is to run away from the situation where as you should either back away or attack which would be much better.

Oh, you mean like run from a knife attack!!! yep, thats definately one of the deadlier myths.

I think a dangerous myth some MA teachers have taught is to run away from the situation where as you should either back away or attack which would be much better.

I think that's an interesting point. The 'run away' strategy gets badly overused IMOP. If a person has done what they can to avoid and de-escalate, but they still find themselves in a violent situation, there is an implication then that the trouble isn't easily going away - running may not be a very good option. People to protect is an obvious example of this, and here are some less obvious ones: you are in a tight crowd and can't run (in a club, in a mob, on a New York street), you are in a closed space (subway, bus, airplane, jail cell), the BG might be faster than you (like an athelete, or an adrenalized addict, or your leg just got hit with a bat).

I can go on and on with examples but the point is the same as has been made on this board ten thousand times - SD situations are so diverse, that training for them should involve training to make a decision at the time of action based on the situation. Training 'Run first, Run hard, Run last' may leave people with no effective base after that fails.

None of which takes away from the fact that running is the best option sometimes, but it needs to be worked as just that - an option. Not a foundation.

Yeah... I had a friend who tried to run away from a fight that was brewing and got the shit kicked out of him. BAD IDEA to turn your back to the BG... We think he was hit at C1 or occiput/C1 (brainstem) and then hitting his head to the cement his body weight multiplied by the acceleration of damage is what did him in. NEVER turn your back even partially when exiting. If you absolutely have to, keep moving and pivoting to minimize the hidden sucker punch. Spatial awareness. Easier to defend against the attack when you know it's coming. Even without blades.

I visited him in the hospital after he was out of ICU and he could barely talk properly. It's been almost a year and he STILL has brain damage... Of course I spent hours and hours looking at the police report and trying to recreate the scene and figure out what he could have done instead... i.e. he has a knife accessible to his right hand, pivots to the right on right foot while drawing the blade in reverse grip, the pivot takes the blade right into the BG's right kidney, pull back and hook under the BG's right arm, slice his torso upwards, clear the shoulder with blade point down, bring the LH pu to the handle for support, using bodyweight drop the point of the blade behind the collarbone, slice the neck as the BG falls, use the body weight to extract from behind the collarbone and make the neck cut, step over his body and get the other stupid piece of shit heroin addict, etc. etc. etc. At least the BG is behind bars now. We made sure of that.

Bummer... I had a friend that was stabbed... On the way out of a local grocery store an unidentified assailant rushed past and stuck him in the chest with something the size and shape of a steak knife. The entry wound was just below the ribcage and left of center. It penetrated at an upward angle and pierced his left ventricle. He bled out on the scene but the ambulance crew got him to the ER in time to pump him full of fluids and restart his heart... He suffered severe brain damage and spent a month and a half in a coma. When he "woke up" he was completely vegetative...He lived for some that way. Never ate another meal or spoke another word.

Sorry to hear about your friend Tyrone, Tant01. As I posted about before, my exboyfriend was killed in a pub; he was just sitting there reading the paper. He was barely 25... RIP Chris...
