  • CMA manners......?

i live in Calgary, and I am learning wingchun and it's been almost two years
now, sometimes i have this desire to go out to other CMA schools and just
have some friendly sparring with people that are not from wingchun, or at
least doing different wingchun, i think it's important because the chance of
fighting another wingchun fighter on the street is very slim.
but i dont know, i am afraid that people will take it the wrong way and think
that i am there to prove i am better than them.
can anyone more experience tell me if there's a good approach when it comes
to test out your skills on other MAs?

You seem like a really nice down to earth guy. I'm sure if you approach the school in the way you have posted your message they would be happy to help. I have found that a few schools do either charge or take it the wrong way (that you are challenging them)

I love sparring/training with guys from other arts as you learn a lot. Wing chun has a lot of gaps and visituing non-wing chun styles is the only way you really see this

I argue daily with people on other forums who insist that wing chunners will never get taken to the floor. The simple fact is that anything can happen and it is better to be prepared than walk into a fight blind.

All I would say is that 2 years in wing chun isn't long so don't get disheartened if you don't do that well in the spar.

    Good luck to you

thank you for the encouragement, red rum, i think i'll find a chance to check out other
CMA school in Calgary. we have a few big names in town, there's this guy who wrote a
wingchun textbook, and there's an "exceptional student" of william cheung's, in fact i was going to that school before my uncle started teaching me his wingchun, so i now i can go back and see the difference.
and there's this other group they practice the iron shirt with wingchun, i've been there
once to see them months back, and they are solid fighters.

Just be careful of exceptional students of William Cheung. Read the previous posts on this forum about Cheung and make up your own mind

        Solid fighters are always good.

Remember that it is not always how good the teacher is, but how good the students are that make a difference. If you are partnered with a bad student, the best teacher in the world won't help!!
