I get this question alot from people? What kind of martial arts do you take? And quite often I have trouble replying. I study derobio escrima (Pedoy style), philipino boxing, arnis/kali, etc. I usually just get a dumb look when I tell them this, so lately I have been saying..."I train with weapons". That usually satisfies their inquiry. How do you answer this question? It is much for a karate student to reply with "Tang Soo doo" when asked the question, but with Philipino arts they different styles are so intertwined with each other...

From personal experience, your answer would depend on who is asking the question, but you can just tell people that you train in Filipino martial arts, which covers both weapons and empty hand. If they really wanted to know more about what you do, then they will ask you.
When people that don't know anything about martial arts ask me about what I do, I reply with as little information as possible because I'm sure they aren't interested in an in-depth answer! They can always ask more questions if they want!

Them: " You take karate or sumtin? "
Me: " Sorta, I train in Philippino arts, namely Escrima. "
Them: " You take whut? Escrima? The heck is dat? I study martial arts tooo! It is called the .44 magnum. Har Har Har! "
They think that is so funny...

I agree with this approach. I also tell them I do FMA or Filipino Martial Arts. If they ask for a name then I tell them, and I also comment that I do not expect them to do know the name either.

Surprisingly few people have heard of jkd OR escrima.
very few have heard of both.
I usually tell people that I take "self defense lessons" and leave it at that.
I also take boxing, which of course they understand. So if I'm faced with a real simpleton I just tell him I'm a boxer and leave the martial arts out of it.
