knives for self defense
I'm just curious, how many of you out there carry blades for self defense and what you carry and why. Just trying to see what the crowd is into.

I have my wife carry Spyderco's "Jess Horn" clipit. It is small, concealable, and easily deployed. I have taught her the twelve strikes, and footwork. Occaisionally, when she feels like it, we will do some knife drills. We will sumbrada, free lance, and then have her stay out at distance, and just slash at any incoming limb. If only she would get into firearms.......I, of course, carry either my ACFK, or the Emmerson Commander. -
sounds great, good to see female martial artist out there, i know some great ones.
you mentioned you carried either/or, why not both? you have two hands! also you might "leave" one someplace and need another. or have one knocked from your hand, or you might have to throw it (that should gets some posts on this thread). who knows, just some ideas.

I carry a partially serrated Spyderco Michael Walker LtWt.
I like the opening hole that the Spyderco's have... not a fan of thumb studs. The Michael Walker opens very smoothly... much nicer than my Endura. I carried the Endura for a year or so, but it was a little big for me. If I needed to squat down, it tended to dig into my hip crease. The MWalker has worked out nicely for me, and it sees daily use for opening boxes and what not.

When carrying two blades, a lot of times my right blade will scrape my car door when I am running around from work. I carry my laptop, my briefcase, palm on my belt, and cell phone. Two scratches on my car door convinced me to carry only one.Comment

I've carried a spyderco endura clipit for the past ten years daily, but recently I've switched to a Kasper Fighting folder; it seems moulded for my hand, great balance and a wonderful blade design. Every now and then I carry a CRKT bear claw concealed around the neck.

I carry a left-handed Benchmade-Emerson (now discontinued and only made right handed by Benchmade), and either my Spyderco Military or 4" Cold Steel Voyager(this is more of a work knife if I need it.) At times you will find up to three on me. (Once upon a time, I was psychotic and would carry 5 plus one around my neck and one on my keychain)...not to mention a Cold Steel bowie and at least a junglee in the car. And a wicked pruning saw made in Japan for back-up. And a bat, and a few sticks. Hey, you never know...different situations call for different tools. And I have them placed strategically around the car. People I train with will know where to get what they need if need be when riding along with me. And that's why I never advise calling someone out on the road. Not to mention some people carry their guns with them-usually illegal.Comment

all of my carries look like multipurpose instruments for police reasons. I've had bad run ins with the law )..
I have a chain in my car, I like chains. it swings like a rope, yet feels like a club. I practiced whipping it around my porch rail with the quick snap-back jerk ...and practiced going for the head/neck of an individual at a horizontal anglewith the same jerking.. I don't know much about flexible weapons, but I've practiced two angles with this one quite a bit..
i like the fact that my chain can be a multi-distance tool (liek the jo-fighter in the dog bros tape)..
but that's an exotic tool for me. I mostly just carry my ken Onion folder..3.5inches.. it flips out really easily, and has a nice blade. I didn't want much more than that.
I started packing a knife for a couple of reasons. one big reason was my size, being a little smaller than average. tcouple with that was a dream I've had since I was young, where I'd be mounted on someone who was trying to really hurt me..and I'd be punching them, but doing no damage ora nything (common dream)..one tiem I woke up from it thinking "I don't have claws..animals do..why don't I have claws.." and it hit me about a second after that I can have a claw..if I want to buy it and pack it. so now I do. and that's how I see my knife. as a hold out weapon. I may not draw at the start of the fight. It's a small blade, so I figure I'll hide it til I use it. if I may quote jokey smurf: "It's a surprise!"Comment
Does anyone prefer silver baldes or black blades for any particular reasons? One that shines in the light may be more intimidating on the street than a black one because, the person may not see a black one due to lack of shine. Some people prefer to not show the blade or to have a black blade for their reasons of getting in and suprising the opponent. I'm sure this is a good deal if you want to kill someone. But how much of us out there WANT to kill people and deal with the legal system. Now when the NEED to kill someone comes up, I'm sure this changes, but when the actual need comes up, I don't think that particularly matters. If you pull a black blade and he doesn't see it, or you hide it, you will most likely close the gap in and let it go from there, though if you pull out a shiny blade, or make it a point(no pun intended) to show it, your attacker may be 'discouraged', or maybe not in whch you wind up in the same predicament as before. If the guy has no weapon and sees yours and still decides to close in on you, you may need to do what you have to do, because he either has thatmuch confidence and knows what he is doing or he just doesn't respect his own life-which means he will respect you even less than that. Do you think this should be considered when buying a blade?

chad: I don't believe in showing my blade in a fighting situation. If a situation is such that I have to pull it, I use (er..would use) the earth grip and keep it hid behind my wrist
I don't believe in showing a weapon. I don't believe in "scaring someone off" with a weapon.
I don't want to kill people, as you said. but if the need arises, I HOPE that i WILL want to. I hope it feels like sex. I hope I plant it in him.
cause if there is a NEED for it, then there is a need. if there is a need, by definition, the greater evil would be not killing.
so what I'm saying is, no, I dont' want to kill, but only cause there is no need.
I don't flip it around in public, either.
my blade is silver, but only because I figured I might scratch the finish up on the black blade sharpening ( I sharpen a lot..soothing meditative thing to do).making it even uglier than it will one day be. it wasn't a big concern or decision maker, however.

Well my Benchmade has a black epoxy coating, but about 1 mm of the sharpened edge is silver and can catch the light, but is hard to see especially when held lown against black pants-what I always wear. I got one of each one me all the time, just in case showing my teeth is necessary, but the black one is considered to be the 'protective' weapon of choice to first come out if needed-although drawing all of them is practiced. Do any of you practice quick drawing while someone attacks you and you weren't expecting it? Tell a friend to run at you whenever he gets a chance but be advised that you will be drawing. I'm sure Harley has worked this, are there any drills you guys use? You've got a pretty quick draw, who did you train with for that?

I'll second the interest in learning how harley practiced his drawing technique. .66 seems pretty fast..i'd like to be there myself..
