  • Silat - Talio Silat

    Hello all,

I'm new here and was glad to find a forum with knowledgable members. Well, my question is this: I live on Long Island, NY and wish to study Silat. The person who is about 10 minutes from me is a man named Roberto Torres of Talio Silat. Does anyone know of his background, and more importantly, has he learned, and does he teach authentic Silat?

I've studied for over 10 years, with my main art being Wing Chun with crosstraining in JKD and BJJ. Will Silat assist in enhancing my close quarter skills? Thanks all!

    Hello Gordo,

I met Tuhon Torres and his family last year at the Sayoc Sama Sama event. I had the opportunity to not only train with him and his daughters but also interview him as well. Very nice guy and highly skilled in Kuntao Silat, as well as boxing and a variety of FMA's.

It depends on the silat systems but all I know will enhance your close quarter skills...
I see it the other way, the main reason I train in Wing Chun is to developp the sensitivity I need in silat....

        Guro Steve L.,

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to be dropping by Tuhon Torres' school later this weekend. Are you one of Tuhon Sayoc's students/instructors? I had the opportunity some years ago to participate in the Bravo and Charlie seminars and found them incredible.

Yes, I figured it wouldn't hurt to complement my wing chun with more close quarter concepts. My friend who I work out with showed me some kali drills which were very different from Wing Chun sensitivity drills that I found were a great addition to my skillset. I also found adding southern mantis chi sao another fine supplement as well.

          Hello Gordo,

Yes, I am a student in Sayoc Kali, with Tuhon Sayoc.

Tuhon Torres, and Tuhon Chris Sayoc go way, way back in their history together. Last year Tuhon Torres taught segments of his Silat curriculum at Sama Sama, it included takedowns and striking, Sarong, Sayoc Fighting Systems(stick work), and even a demonstration of tactical boxing skills from his daughters. Definitely a great person to train with.

            Guro Steve L., All,

I am quite disheartened now. I called up Tuhon Torres last night and found out that he doesn't hold regular classes anymore, he mainly does private instruction and semiars. Now I guess I'll have to start looking for another Silat/Kali teacher in the Long Island, NY area. It was already so hard to find him.

Does anyone know of anyone else they could reccomend in the Long Island, Ny area? I found this other person that has a lineage to Herman Suwanda by the name of Charles Chi. I looked at his website and it looked a little strange for a silat/kali/jkd instructor:

From the pictures though, his adult class seems to take a no-nonsense approach which is what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on this?

Also, would it be disrespectful if I emailed Tuhon Torres again to see if there are any other Silat/Kali teachers he would reccomend? I wouldn't want him to take it as a disrespectful question.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If someone wants to PM me, it'd be great too.

                Gillin,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to be doing more research on Silat on Long Island. Rare arts are tough to locate.

So I'm definitely wary of this guy now:

I found out even though Inosanto lists him as an instructor under him, he learned through seminars, not through consistent training. I couldn't believe Inosanto uses seminars to certify instructors. I'm also led to believe his Silat through Herman Suwanda was also done through seminars. This totally sucks. Rare arts like Silat are so tough to find on Long Island, NY. I think I'm going to call Tuhon Roberto Torres again to see maybe if he has senior instructors that teach part time. I truly wish to learn under his lineage.
