Hello Everyone
I finally caught up on watching and reviewing the new Atienza Kali training DVD, and I have to say it is packed with a fantastic overview of the basic material covered in Atienza Kali.
From the introduction, each of the three Atienza brothers explain an aspect of their system. It leads off with Guro Allain discussing the “mental state and combatant” philosophy, Guro Carl discussing the reasoning behind the blade and how it is more effective to transfer skills from the blade to the stick than the stick to the blade, and finally Guro Darryl explaining the development of the “Mass Attack.”
Atienza Kali Single Sword Defenses
The DVD then launches directly to the fundamental of the system, covering:
The upper and lower X
Horizontal slash
Long slash
Short slash
Methods to create power in your strike
Short slash vs the Long slash
Footwork integrated with the strikes
Parrying
Point down deflections
The next section covers the “Atienza Kali Double weapon one step drill”. Practicing and applying this drill will require you to fully integrate the material covered in the previous section.
The DVD moves on to the “Atienza Kali Hourglass footwork drill” and then to “Heavy Weapons training”!
Guro Carl demonstrates and discusses the use of the heavy weapon to develop the mechanics of the body properly, without the jamming of the joints, various patterns, and even the use of this drill in practicing drawing of the weapon.
The next section, Atienza Kali Combat Strategy, Forcing the Anchor Points, is a great addition to understanding a very important strategy, that will help you efficiently counter an opponent’s movements, by understanding where his potential strike will be coming from.
One of my favorite portions of the DVD is the “Mass Attack”. This combative drill teaches a student how to survive in an overwhelming situation. Many demonstrations and various scenarios are played out in this drill, not only with the long blade but with the dagger as well, which is finally looked at in the final section Atienza Kali Dagger Concepts.
The total run time is ~35 minutes, not including the hilarious outtakes section, and costs $34.00 but this DVD has a lot to offer in the way it is formatted out and the amount of material presented. Definitely something to add to your training collection!!!
