FMA's for self defense

Hello...

I have a question about the FMA modern arnis. I am thinking about going to a modern arnis class, mainly because i want to learn some self defense.
From what i have learned it is very much based on the use of weapons. Now to my question - Will i be able to use modern arnis for self defense if i am not walking around with a weapon?

There is an empty-hand component in Modern Arnis. I don't know much about Modern Arnis specifically, but many FMA have boxing(pangkamot, panantukan), wrestling(dumog), kicking(sikran), joint locks, limb destruction, etc. So yes, you can learn self-defence.

Yes you will beable to use modern arnis for self defense...once you begin to learn the use of the weapons at the same time you are learning the same technique for empty hand...

Ask your teacher to demonstrate to you the connection between the weapon and the empty hand.

By Modern Arnis I am taking a guess you mean the system that Grandmaster Remy Presas developed !?!?

That being the case then there is a large component of empty hand techniques inside the syllabus. So you shouldn't have any issues using modern arnis for self defense. Infact its one of the better systems for self defense if you have a good teacher.

I do Kombatan which is Grandmaster Ernesto Presas system and I changed to it from Karate because I believed it was a far more effective street art that really could save my life if need be.

In short go for it you will be surprised at how effective FMA's can be empty hand.

Sorry for bumping this topic, but its relevant to a topic i was off topic on before. :P Anyway:

I mentioned that i sometimes carry a 21' pipe when i go to the cash machine, for obvious reasons. Problem is, Im a Brit and there are pretty strick laws over here as to whats a weapon, what aint - ant what'll land you in deep shit.

I am doing empty hand in FMA but im just starting (first belt test soon ) and i know id fail if i came up against multiple opponents - if i had a stick id be able to at least defend myself well and gain time to escape. There is a precident to this, a good friend of mine was walking thru a dodgy area- so he brought his stick and sum ppl tried to mug him - he scared 1 away and hit the other guy until he stopped hittin back.

Advice please!

EDUCATE YOUR ATTITUDE. Anything from a fistload to your "pipe" is a weapon by law which makes YOU the offender. How funny you must look with a big old thing like that! Frightened little man....

Listen Sam Man (read) I mean no harm, in fact quite the opposite. If you look again at my post I said the biggest problem (i see) is the mindset. I realize the problem may seem entirely hopeless when you're outnumbered like you suggest but it's a reality that these thugs work in groups. It is my strong personal opinion (for what it's worth) that understanding the psychology and physiology of fear and the INTENT of the BG will take you much further toward personal security than a colored belt...

They are single edged versions to comply with Ca.(USA) law...

I have no intent to use them for anything other than a utility tool, artistic and educational value aside... Can't say the same for a hunk of pipe. Custom knives of this quality are "investment" grade tools. One will become my new EDC (for work) and the other gets put on a shelf. Unless I'm "playing" with them. I also have and carry other knives including another custom karambit made by an ABS Journeyman smith named Craig Camerer in Hettick Il. These two are only the latest in my growing collection and my only matched set.
