I am an avid kalista, i studied kali in Mindanao Philippines.
in my kali experience in the P.I. Knife concepts is a major part of training...but we needed to understand two separate and distinct concepts...
1.Knife defense-- is total understanding of evading knife attacks by regcognizing angles of attacks and discharges (Succession of attacks) and evading the blade for self preservation only, without an offensive edge.
2. Knife disarms--is a distinct and separate concept, with an offensive edge.
taken into consideration this two angles of understanding, a kalista will know when the eventuality will come , either to defend or disarm.
Since i came here in the US, this distinct understanding of original kalistas are not recognized instead knife defense has been synonymous to knife disarms.
I find this approach too westernized.
I feel that if a person is true to it's Kali heritage no matter what system, this understanding should be there .
My two cents.
