My preferred tool for physical conditioning is the Clubbell. I find it ideal for developing the ROM, strength, endurance and coordination I need for weapon-handling. The beginning stages of Clubbell work are like escrima - you need to learn how to hold it and use it safely in basic movements before you get to the "fun stuff".
For those who progress beyond the basics and master the basic Clubbell combinations, I have been creating some combination routines specifically for FMA enthusiasts. They require a certain base amount of ROM, strength, endurance and coordination before you try them, and will enhance those attributes significantly with practice. Since they do not replicate existing stick or knife patterns, they will not interfere with your actual weapon skills the way that working with heavy sticks does.
