  • Length of telescopic baton...

I recently purchased a 21' inch telescopic bation yesterday. I am mainly a practitioner of largo mano, and I was wondering if a 21' inch stick wouldn't be ideal for largo mano....isn't it more suitable for Serrada? I really don't wanna spend anymore cash on a longer baton and if possible, can I apply a short stick to Largo mano training? THanks

Remember, it isn't the length of your telescopic baton, its how hard you hit someone with it!

Yeah, it also depends how much time you spend wearing 'em down so that you can use your telescope effectively.

        Telescopic Baton

Dump the 21" Baton and go with the Longer weapon. Here in my job several of our guys have gotten good solid hits with it and it didn't seem to have the punch it should have due to the weight being more balanced in the handle then the "thump" end. They have applied hits to the shoulder, leg and kneecap without much of a response. Now granted these guys arent martial Artists, but, have clubbed a few people with the various impact weapons availe or were available to us.

I was issued a 26" ASP and didnt like the feel of it. I did managed to get ahold of a 31" ASP and it has a different feel and heft to it. It feels alot more balanced than the shorter models and the weight seems more biased to the end of the longer version. I let a few of the afformentioned officers swing it and they liked it and thought it would work better and hit better.

I guess I got a little bit off topic than the question you asked.....

I was wondering wether to get a proper telescopic bation or a folding stick or something - i live in a dodgy area and i stick out like a sore thumb, i usually carry a 21" metal bar for special occasions (when im goin to the cash machine) - im giving serious thought to getting some kind of stick.

If you understand the principles of your art and know how to control the proper range to utilize its effectiveness then length of the baton should not be an over bearing factor. Train your accuracy and power on moving targets. However, you may want to also work on your deployment and/or draw strikes.

mate, you sound like a fellow Brit. In which case, i'm sure you know that if you get caught carrying (or worse, using) anything like that you'll be in deep doodoo.

I also live in a messed up part of town but my weapon of choice in an everyday house-hold item. It's no where near as effective at long range like a baton but at close range one-on-one or one VS two or three it can be pretty deadly. But the best thing about it is that I can claim self-defense and say it was just something I had at hand. Where as a telescopic baton is not a tool used for every-day things. It's an object dedicated to being an impact weapon. If the 'second enemy' (the law) catch you with one of those (or that 21" pipe) there's no way you can pretend you were using it as walking stick

Anyway, this is another subject. I'm sure there's a topic on this board that is more suited
