Panantukan?

I may be wrong, but...

I saw MAMike's signature and observed through this forum and others that you guys spell panantukan as P-A-N-A-N-T-U-K-A-N. Sorry but being filipino myself, I just have to question the spelling of the word. I believe the word "Panantukan" being referred to is for the word "Suntok" which means "punch". So I thought that maybe it should be "Panuntokan" or "Panuntukan"?

But hey... it's just me.

Panantukan is the tagalog term of pagamit sa suntok which means the ability to strike. In visayan it calls kupog or suntokan and another generally term is panuntukan, too. Same like sikaran (visayan) or panadiakan (tagalog) which both means the art of kicking.

Result: we both are right

The reason why i use the term panantukan is, because my teachers (Guro Dan Inosanto, Sifu Rick Faye, Sifu Larry Hartsell) all use this term, too.

panadiakan is kinda right. because it is from the joining of 2 words. 1st word: "pang" which sort of mean "for" and 2nd word "tadyak" or "tadiak" which means "kick". So if you say "pang tadyak" or "pang tadiak" or "pang tadyakan", it sort of means "for kicking". Or to make it short, I guess you can turn it into one word, thus "panadiakan".

you are right, "sikaran" means "kicking" which is visayan. just like tagalog, i speak visayan too. it comes from the word "sikad" which means "kick". so "sikaran" means "kicking" or "for kicking".

Now... "panantukan"... comes from 2 words: "pang" which means "for" and "antok" which means "sleepy". So, if you join the 2 words it would mean "for getting sleepy"? Haha! If you guys plan to use the art to knock out somebody or make him groggy or sleepy, "panantukan" would mean just right.

but i'm not mr. know-it-all and maybe i am wrong. i am just basing it on what i know of the language as a spoken form. maybe i should ask some filipino major graduates or students some time soon.

oh... sorry if i sound like one. but i live in the philippines and i've been speaking tagalog and visaya (cebuano in particular) for the last 27 years of my life. so i thought of sharing out my insights about the use of tagalog words. perhaps the guys who made up the word panantukan are from people who may not know how to speak tagalog at all or may have heard it right but wrote it wrong or whatever.

err... you don't have to be sarcastic if all i wanted was to share my small bit of my knowledge of the language. i didn't even insist that i was right and all of them were wrong. i only spoke out my observation. and i did not say all the grandmasters and masters are idiots. i only made a comment about the word dude. did you have a bad day or something?

if you speak better tagalog than i do, then i stand to be corrected.

You're input is well appreciated. Guro Dan has said on more than one occasion a couple of things concerning the word, Panantukan:

1. Many of the terms that he uses and spells come from many people who were not well educated and he basically had to spell out what they were saying as many of them could not spell. So, the spelling is probably his.

2. He was also told that suntokan is actually the more correct term, but that they told him it sounds too much like Shotokan and would be confused, thus the use of panantukan or as he's also called it, panatukan.

Further, there are many other words in styles like JKD which were spelling different from teacher to teacher. Also with wing chun. So, it's more the western influence to the filipino language.

hi! its not that i'm put off... in fact as a filipino, i admire guro dan inosanto and others for promoting FMA abroad, and i admire the rest of you guys like MAMike for loving FMA. i just wished things were spelled right. but as i said earlier, i may be wrong because perhaps in ancient times they actually called it "panantukan". perhaps i'll ask filipino language majors about it.
