Actually, in Arnis when you know armed fighting, you'll know hand to hand combat too.

So you're trying to say that you have encountered many people who practice some form of fma and none of them knows how to fight without a weapon. That would be highly ignorant as you yourself suggested. "Everyone" is a loaded word, it makes you sound like an "a hole" because you seem to imply that you've encountered several people who practice the fma's and none of them would know what to do without a weapon . Which is funny because I'm sure anyone who really does practice fma would have knowledge of filipino boxing and grappling. Also most any fma practicioner would know that several weapons techniques carry over as empty hand techniques. What I found "ignorant" about your statement is that it seems patently false (maybe you know two guys who just started fma class or something).

believe it or not, kali does have some empty hand stuff. But silat, and even some sayoc are empty hand. Not to mention arnis escrima. Not all of it is stick. And besides, if i got into a fight, i would rather rely on my knife skills than my hand to hand. I've got a better chance of winning/escaping/surviving if i know what im doing with a knife

But Silat is not an "empty" hand art. Not at all. While it is true that most pentjakers are formidable with without weapons, it is a blade art first. Make no mistake....

Yes, kali is a comprehensive combat art that includes jamming, sweeps, throws, jointlocks, disarms and striking of all kinds. Not to mention the "foul" tactics!!

they are practical, comprehensive martial arts for the modern world,
from long range weapons, to close range weapons, to empty hand.
even with preferences, you cover all bases.

All FMA styles/systems that I have encountered teach unarmed defense that has a direct correlation to their weapons training. Many Grandmasters in the P.I. are also very skilled in Judo or Jujitsu, and integrate this knowledge with both their weapons and empty hand techniques.

Many of the FMA instructors that I know of here have dominated when facing off against other MA stylists, unarmed. The reason for this is because most FMA stylists are not usually taught to fight with a "sport" mentality. To most FMArtists fighting is about survival, and when you are fighting to survive you don't fight within the "rules". Therefore FMArtists tend to have an "anything goes" type of mentality.

Lots of guys choose to focus on the weapons aspect. In my experience there are three types of these weapons-focused people in Filipino Martial Arts:

1. The kind who focus on weapons because they're insecure and know that they'll never really have to draw steel and go to work on someone to prove they know what they're talking about. To these guys, if it looks impressive and they can beat you at the Game, they're great martial artists. I have no use for these jokers.

2. People who focus on weapons because they love what the weapons bring out. They like the fact that it DOES make you better at empty hand all by itself, but they really don't care. They like the idea that if things get messy in the real world, they'll have an advantage, because they'll waste no time in getting armed. They know you can throw all the punches and kicks you want, but that they'll have a great shot at stopping you once they've bashed your hands into fajita meat and cut out your intestines. I respect these people and admire their nefarious sense of foul-play. They truly understand fighting.

3. People who focus on weapons because they realize that others like to use them. (See type 2 for more detail) I think I fall into this category. I love training with weapons, mostly because I find it to be a lot of fun. It's a great mental stretch to try and keep up with all of the options and intricacies fo weapons work. Some, I take very pragmatically (see forearms, knives, and improvised weapons), and some I do just because I love the training (see stick and dagger, double anything, flexible weapons, etc.). I know there are real benfits, but I also know that in my normal waking life, I carry a gun and a knife, and if I'm at work, I add a baton, pepper spray, and a pair of handcuffs. These are the things I focus on, but I allow myself the fun time of training the rest because I like it, plain and simple.

As far as knowing how to fight empty handed? I place a premium on it. That's the least advantageous situation I can be in: Unarmed and in a fight. So I tend to train it most. I can't speak for all the FMA people out there, and as it relates to you, I can't even tell you if I'm any good. I can tell you I love my training, I think it works, and I'd be happy to train with you if we're ever in the same area. PM me if you'd like some good people to train with, or if you have plans to be in Colorado. We'll get together and train some.
