So you want to be a Kali Silat guru? (POLL)
In my humble opinion, everyone already is. From the early days in life, we help our brother, sister, friend and in some ways have also told others, "exactly", what "you need to do".
Here's a reply I had for those of you that really want to grow and become a guru. First of all you don't need to attend any program, it'll just take you longer. And, you do need to have the material and the desire to grow. Then begin by sharing and helping others, oh, and answer the question for this poll, if you really know, it'll be easy.
Training with others: Make it easy, suggest starting with hitting the sticks, they get the work out without the hitting. Feel out their wants and desires for training after you start showing them what to do.
Start with the footwork drills, practice by following the sequences on the DVDs F, G, L, if you have them, or work the material you have. Once you understand it's what you do that counts, and how you can be different, you are firmly basing your arts on what material you practice. For example. A typist learns first how to hit every target. Then practices for speed and accuracy. Now it's time to make your own story, from the words, to the sentences, to the paragraph, you get the idea. Just like in JKD, only, you really have to be observing everywhere, not just here. When you know where to look, look there again, Kali Silat, Penjak Silat resides in the same place.
You create your art of what you like to do, practice what you like, examine, slow, then fast, soft, then hard, it's the way of learning.
Above are the words of Suryadi Jafri with us in spirit. Below is just a suggestion, "Why not prove it to your self?", I always say.
Come to our five day program in Virginia Beach, VA Sept 9 - 13th, starts on Friday, ends on Tuesday. This is a certification program, and you are guru or guru candidate, but only one element makes a teacher (guru), see poll below.
Help your neighbor as your self, it's the only way to grow.
