  • Live blade training injuries

Hey guys. I've been wondering how many of you guys did live blade training. I recently injured myself during a live blade session. I accidentally rip cut my left hand practicing some solo knife drills and patterns with a ten inch blade. I had to go to the ER to get stitches done and now I am bandaged up for the next few days. If you train with live blades regularly, I'm sure there had to be some injuries.

If anyone else here has had a live blade injury, feel free to share your stories about recovery here. They would sure make me feel better.

I knicked my thumb when spinning my Kerambit when I first got it. Does that count?

Maybe a dumb question. Why would you train solo with a sharp live weapon?

"Maybe a dumb question. Why would you train solo with a sharp live weapon?"

I've been training in the FMAs for years now, but I've only done live blade training for the last 2 years or so every now and then. I find that handling a live weapon solo is safer than doing a partner drill with a sharp live weapon, and it allows me to understand what my movements are really about. i was basically doing what is known as a Sayaw or Anyo and I have been practicing it for the last few years. However, my hand accidentally got cut during a recent training session. Its healing up quite well I must say...and I can't wait to get these stitches out.

Sorry to hear about your injury, hope it heals well and quickly. My hands have taken a beating. I can't count all the small scars but a few stand out. I have been cut on both legs near my groin through my jeans, stabbed in the hands (both of them) and my forearm. I havn't cut myself for many years and I play with my karambits almost every day!

          Accidents will happen...

Training with live blades adds realism and danger to the training, this increases your concentration and helps improve attention to detail, (like where your body is ) Its very important to be able run live blades solo, if you cant run them solo without cutting yourself, I'll be damned if IM running live blades with you in two man sets or drills

some people never should touch a knife though, i have seen a few people who scare me more opening the damn thing than brandishing it...you just KNOW its gonna go flyin, you just arent sure which direction!

specialty weapons like a kerambit will bite you more often than the traditional fixed blade will though. i think we will probably all agree pocket knives get us more than everything else combined due to opening and closing them.

an often neglected skill is drawing and opening folders quickly, then add stress you will see it takes practice. this is a skill hard to learn with anything other than the actual knife you carry or an identical dull trainer. with practice you can draw and open quicker than a switchblade.

these are a few reasons for live blade solo training there are many more...
and we all know this, but i gotta say it, if you play with knives, you will get cut...because to paraphrase tanto1 ....shit happens....

kinda? Yeah sword injuries count BIG time ...foot or leg with a taiji sword?

i was taught this rule: 3 years from the LAST time you hit yourself with a wooden sword, you get an actual sharp sword.

ive been bitten ky several Katanas and Tantos in traditional scabbards that slid out to find a thumb or fingers...

Leg. Nothing major, though. Just enough to be embarrassing

yeah it seems to work out that swords get legs, especially when weilding double swords i brushed the leg of my gi once or twice with a katana in my youth scared the bejesus out of me and made me slow down each time...
