  • Pacific Warrior Island Arts- Reppin Pinoy Style!

I couldn't be prouder of the TEAM at Pacific Warrior Island Arts! The Vail Ring of Fire event Heralded the return of Louie the KO king Lagunsad who stood true to his namesake by knocking out his opponent witha monstrous left hand. His opponent however managed to struggle to his feet, wherein Louie rushed across the ring picked him up and slammed him, and slapped on a reverse armbar which king kong would've complied with! Win for Lagunsad!
    (see attached)

Haven torres who stepped in at a trim, 135 lbs made an impressive display against his opponent, who despite consistent attempts to take Haven to the mat, could not pass Havens flawless Spider guard, until he managed to slap on a choke during round two. Good showing Haven!

Finally, Drew the Vanilla Gorilla Knapp our resident 6 ft 1 255 Heavyweight met a man in the ring who actually outsized him at 6'3 and 265!
size however does not mean the mettle of a man as The vanilla one, proved way too mean and nasty recovering from a near slip, mounted his opponent, reached side control and dealt out a nasty double arm lock using his legs to secure and lock one arm, while figure fouring his opponenets other!

Pacific Warrior is proud to carry the banner of our native Pacific Island and Filipino Arts to a world in which they are rarely seen.
stay tuned for Kuya Gabriel's return in the the next couple of months.. I figure still have a few left in me as well
    Peace and Adobo Grease!~

          To shen Lao

Hello, Shen. In response to your post, I do not teach BJJ, am not qualified to speak for it nor have I ever taken it) (not that i wouldnt just no teachers where i am)

what you assume here is BJJ, is a move that is included in almost any style in the world that includes some type of grappling element.(also reference pekiti tirsias dumog pangamut for some great spine and leg locks) or.. 99% of all pacific styles (Pacific warrior Island arts is after all the name) and you will find this technique primarily the Hawaiian version which IS done in this exact sideposition. or rongomamau of aotearoa.

The final movement Louie used was to avoid punishing the other fighter anymore as Louie had already dropped him with a monstrous overhand. (He is only 5'3) so hard, that the other fighter afterward, asked if "he had fought yet."

Now on to your other question about pure fma moves. how many strictly Filipino fighters have you actually seen in UFC? (I think UFC 2 or 3 had a Filipino fighter named Onsassis Purungao who won his fight) In your words they resort to flailing away or using something other than FMA.

First there are 7100 islands in the PI. Each with distinct styles and flavors of fighting. from strictly empty hands, to strictly weapons and all permutations in between. what are you assuming is fma empty hands? Feel free to check out the URCC, or Fearless cage championships in the Philippines, and you will see fighters like Ronald bingwaoel who competes using boltong tribal grappling, or Daniel the mumbakki foronda, who snapped his opponents ankle using traditional dumog, or Yaw Yan who will fight just about anybody at anytime, once again FMA empty hands. they are available on VCD. go to pinoymma.com

Now as for our gym particularly, How many times have you actually seen us compete? a few examples..
          1. Rocky mountain slammer in which I fought an opponent 6 inches taller and 40 lbs heavier than me, and utilzed knees, elbows my live hand, throws and the flying headbutt, to secure a win.

2.Circle of combat 1 (memorial hall colorado springs colorado) i fought bodybuilder brad helm (an awesome guy by the way) and despite me losing a decision, used harimau takedowns, and more to hang with a guy, who looks like he couldve popped my head like a pimple. (he almost did)

          3. shannon measels very close fight with brad champlin at rumble in the rockies cage challenge where he consistently used waslik to his opponents jab, and elbowed on the entry to score a knockout.

These events are, just supporting examples for the purpose of THIS particular discussion. Im sure that this is happening at other events everywhere as well, it's just who says "It's a good thing i used my crossada destruction against his right hooking attack"...you either simply won or lost. Like the old batman, where he would say, i used my super hyperextender ray gun to nullify his mind erasing death stare.. noone does that.

The thing is that most fma is not designed for competition, it is a dance of life and death that has consistently proved it's mettle over centuries, during WW2, tribal confrontation, and in the streets and docks of the PI today.
This topic was adressed a long time ago here by the Atienza brothers as well.

Hence the reason weapons are taught first. It is not intended to be sold as the answer all to the UFC or mcdojo. It is a personal treasure of the Filipino people that is for defense of family country and self. The only reason a couple of my guys even compete is because we are adrenaline junkies, enjoy the competition and playing piano never really worked out for us we are not an mma school, and don't claim to be first we are a self defense school big difference.

At any rate, you will rarely find an art that embraces the true spirit of JKD like Filipino Martial arts, whatever form it takes to win. the key is, that any art can be effective in a competition if it is trained for the conditions of that "sport". this was made evident when the first ufc were dominated by grapplers, then the stand up guys learned how to "anti-grapple" and made the grappplers play their game. This is where the dog brothers excel, always training against all eventualities. Their forums over there have some great articles as well. Sorry so long winded wheeuww! Oh Kuya Keno is also based in denver now if you want to get a hold of him. Cheers and good luck

          The perfect example:

"What do you have one technique? ten techniques no! it's not about the number of techniques you have, but how do you teach this art to be more effective" its about how you train, and how you train depend upon who train you"
