Last weekend Guro Krishna Godhania, Sayoc Kali European Repersentitive, hosted a seminar with Tuhon Tom Kier who was assisted by Guro Chuck Giangreco. Friday night was private training in Sayoc Tactical.
Saturday's seminar began with the 4 of 12 Right Hand Template, followed by the Left Hand Template which in Sayoc Kali is different, in order to train both the mind (which has to deal with both hands performing different movements) and the alive hand to a higher level. Both templates were then practised together taking a right hand lead.
From here we went into Receiver grips, which is a training method for controling an opponents knife hand more effectively when you are empty handed. It should be noted that although the different grips are trained like a drill, Tuhon Tom emphasised that once one is proficent at the grips they should be trained randomly, out of sequence until worked against a non-compliant opponent. The final section of training concluded with some stickgrappling, working from tie-ups. The Saturday finished with a Q and A session.
Sunday morning was spent reviewing the previous days material, from where we moved into Transitional Drill 1. From here we moved into isolations from the Drill and once again Tuhon Tom placed great importance on how the training of these Drills evolves adding different types of resistance, so that one is constantly learning and challenging oneself. However, he also emphasised how vitally important it was, not to go too quickly into free flow without having learnt the correct mechanics etc. The next section of the seminar focused on Stand Up grappling, working from an opponent attempting a push/trying to get grips etc and working in to tie-ups. We worked a number of techniques from here to securing your opponents back, with participants receiving a number of tips from Tuhon Tom who is an accomplished wrestler. He has competed for over 28 years, from the age of 5, with over 1000 competitive fights not including gym fights and has trained in a number of different styles including Folk and Greco Roman. The seminar concluded with some more work on Transitional Drill 1 and then another question and answer session. We're hoping to have Tuhon Tom back to Europe (France and Ireland) around October/November.
