I've Been Researching Different Martial Arts For Around 8 Months. I Was Introduced To The Filipino Systems By An Individual Named Travis, Whom Reccommended Me To A Local Group Of Guys Skilled In Several Pacific Styles. However, After Witnessesing Several Filipino Martial Arts In Full Contact Matches, I Noticed That Everyone Whom Won Used Something Other Than What Was Taught Or Displayed In Demonstration Etc. It Seemed Like They All Resorted To B.j.j. And Wild Swings Etc. Why Is This? Can Any Of You Share Real Life Examples Where, Using Only Filipino Moves You Won Or Lost And Why? I Guess It All Comes Down To What Bruce Said : You Can Not Segment A Totality. No One System Is Better Than The Other. In The End Survival Is What Counts, Not Decoration. Do The Filipino Systems Include Any Unique Forms Or Concepts For Grappling Etc? I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY IMPUT!

I asked almost this very same question in this thread.
It was Crafty Dog of the Dog Brothers promoting their new clips on their websites, I watched them, found it very interesting and posed almost the same questions you did.
I recieved a few answers from forum members, and then Guro Craft answered my question about the particular piece, and skill levels.
I think that should answer your question, now I do see certain techniques and skills being applied as I've done more research into the FMA, particularly stickfighting.
I recently took up this art and love it, I see the techniques going on in the stickfights as I would see the techniques being executed in a BJJ match, or a mma fight.
At that time I was a FMA noob (still am), who was watching stickfights, like the MMA noob watches a UFC fight...
"Their just laying on top of each other" is what they see, but while watching the grappling take place I notice the subtle movements of hips setting up a submission attempt, the postures and controls they are using, when they move from gaurd to half gaurd I notice that and notice the techniques used...
While others see them just laying on top of each other.
Hope that helps.
