Training in the Philippines: how to?

i have decided to train in the philippines this summer, looking forward to quality training for a fair price, something i am unable to find here...

so how is it done? where do you go in the philippines? how do you find people who are good and want to train a foreigner? what to bring?

please share your experiences with training in the philippines

Salami, where do you live? If you include the cost of airfare and lodging during your stay in the Philippines this summer, you're probably looking at over $2000 if you're coming from the U.S...and that's not including the cost of trainiing from whatever school you find in the Philippines.

If you're coming from closer in, like Thailand, or Singapore, then the cost of airfare shouldn't be so bad, but...

However, if you do live in the U.S., there are some good teachers here. Kelly Worden teaches out of Washington State, and runs seminars from time to time around the country. He also teaches the U.S. Army's First Special Forces Group, so his reputation is solid.

Also in the U.S. you'll find various schools that teach Sayoc Kali, also well respected in the business.

If you're set on going to the P.I. to learn kali, you might start by contacting local Kali schools, and ask about the reputable schools in the Philippines and go from there.

If you do go, it should be an eye opener. I understand the monsoon season hits around summer time there, so if you go, make sure to bring an umbrella!

i don't mind paying for the trip, i just can't stand to pay overpriced instructors in the west

also it sounds like a pretty cool thing to do, but as i have never done it i need info from you.

where should you go in the philippines? are there training camps like the muay thai camps in thailand? is it ok to go by yourself? do you need to bring your own weapons or are they quite inexpensive over there?

My suggestion in the PI is to visit GM Tony Diego of Kali Ilustrisimo. He can be found in Luneta or Chinatown.

Also visit one of the Yaw-Yan temples for MT style empty-hands.

Check out a thread I started at www.fmaforum.com dealing with the issue under "Paco" titled "foreigner training in the Philipines". You can talk to Pinoy martial artists there and they'll give you good pointers.
So far as I herad, there were no MT-style package training camps, and, when you factor in airfare and accomodations, it comes out to a lot of money (at least for me since I wouldn't be travelling by myself). Hope it helps.

Hey,

I have been over to the Philippines twice for training spending about 2-3 weeks at a time over there.
The only people that I have trained with is Grand Master Ernesto Presas who is based in Manilla (but can if you choose take you to his resort in Negros for training).
At the headquarters in Manilla there is always 4 or 5 Masters training on a regular basis so even if Grand Master is not available his son Master Jan Presas or his son in law Master Michael will be at hand.
Also every two years there is a world training camp held in the philippines for the International Philippine Martial Arts Federation these are held for 2 weeks in Negros. I have been to the lat two camps and highly recommend them.
