I would recommend thinking outside of the box as well - a survival course, a firearm's course, an ethics class, a first aid class, a lifeguard course, driving course... martial arts goes beyond fighting.

Sayoc Kali
Excellent advice. I myself have attended survival school. For some stupid, lazy reason I've been putting off the range and the first aid when I know they are very important. Posts like this are a kick in the ass that remind me that I'm wasting time that I may regret later.
Here is the deal, you can study another art if you WANT, but to respond to a question like "What would you study in addition to FMA's?" I would say you dont NEED to train any other system. Of course this depends on what system of FMA you are learning and/or under whom you are training. The FMAs are "Complete" systems in there own right, and cover everything needed to be a great fighter in any range and circumstance. I would turn away from the normal jkd thing, as they cover many different ranges but really are not any good at any one of them. This is the problem with picking little things up here and there and throwing it in a mix with little understanding of what they picked up, kind of a "know a little of a lot, but a master of nothing".
You might just need to pick a better instructor that knows a complete system of FMA, but remember you have to earn the right within the culture to gain the deep understanding of the FMAs, otherwise you will only get and see the basic demo style of the system.
Good Luck
Yo guys, it's not that I don't think FMA gives me a complete self defence system, I think it does. It is just that at my school I can only go twice a week, and there is no place else that I can take Kali at with my schedule. So I just wanted to put another day or two of martial arts training in for the week, but I cannot do it in Kali because there is no place too. So I was just thinking of just taking another style to still get in a work out.
Unless you all think I should just stick with the twice a week.
