who here does this? I know about our friends in hawaii that go real contact, and our canine friends setting the pace.. but who, like me, is still progressing to this stage with their padded sticks? and how do you make them? and how, specifically, do you guys fight with them?

yep
that's what we do. i figured it was pretty much universal. as soon as we get better, we're gonna upgrade to dowels instead of pvc.. but the pvc still puts welts and bumps all over me.. not to mention the color changes my bruises go through.. purple to blue to green to yellow to some sick puke color. heh.
i found that with this basic weapon, it works better if you first tear off 3 inch strips of duct tape, and tape the seam of the insulation perpendicular to the weapon..to "suture" it closed.. i do that every 2 to 3 inches. then i cover the rest of the weapon LENGTHWISE with the duct tape, not spirals.. also, i tried leaving 2 inches of insulation at the tip of the weapon..so thrusts wouldn't suck so bad.. but that DOESN'T work.. as the free play in the insulation (even when foam stuffed) makes the foam around the tip break down faster.. and you're basically taking shots form bare pipe.
i also leave the bottom 6-8 inches bare, for a handle.. we have to repad our weapons every month or so.. which comes to about every 8 hours of straight fighting. the foam crushes.
badger, how do you guys utilize em? you fight in rounds? you keep score? (we don't do either really, we fight til exhausted)..
anyone else do this?

I'm an absolute novice in stickfighting; I've ordered the DB video series, but I've not received it yet.
We do use the universal PVC sticks, and we go all out, no rounds and no time limits; when one has enough, it's over.
Right now I'm trying to do this more frequently but until now I train with sticks only one or two times a week.
For Instruction, we are relying from a video from panther; it's very basic stuff teached from a guy named Arsenio Advincula.
Do you know him?
I think his series is the only panther tapes over two hours lenght.

Yep..
I ordered the DBrothers video series TODAY, baby!!! woohoo baby!
Never heard of advincula...
We spar two days a week, as well, underdog. even with so few days devoted to practice, we're showing steady improvements. We go all out as well. Mornings after practice nights I sit here at my computer at work and type with a swollen thumb, or an elbow with a welt on it the size of a peach pit. The guy I spar and train with is my boss's brother-in-law (how else do you think i landed a real job?)
we wear macho head gear, the foam rubber "tae kwon do" type, not the one with the face cage on it.. we also wear these fingerless bag gloves, kind of like what you see in ufc.. i really like them, for stickfighting as well as for bag gloves. one alteration we had to make to them was to cut out the plastic tube sewn in the palm.. it's there to give boxers a firmer fist and prevent hand injuries.. but when stickfighting, it really wears your hands out..very clumsy. they are great, cause they aren't TOO padded.. we still feel the pain when we get hit.. and if we don't, then it obviously wasn't hard enough... I'd fight without the gloves, but my job depends on my ability to type.. so for now i'm slumming with gloves on..
I'm on edge waiting for my db tapes.. I wonder how long it will take...hm.
do you guys wear head gear or other protective gear?

You might want to see if you can find 3/4" polycarbonate tubes (Lexan) instead of PVC. PVC splinters when it breaks and is sharp. But it IS cheap & easy to find. Lameco int'l has some good stuff if you want something better & are willing to pay for it.
We use premade ones that have a "polycore" center. It's solid, it WON'T break, and it's thin. The padding is a nice foam, almost like that stuff on some bike handlebars - it doesn't rip like pipe foam or the cheap AWMA/Century padded sticks. Problems - 1) the guy no longer makes 'em! 2) they're "whippy". That is, they bend. In practice, if you do a witik and stop an inch from your partner's head, the stick has other plans and keeps going, hitting him anyway. So, only use for when you WANT to hit ;-)
I have the Advincula set. It's good that they last so long, because the pasce is so slow. Good basic stuff, but you'll get a lot more from the Dog Bros. stuff.
Kudos to getting them right from the Dog Bros. I got mine from Panther because I didn't know better at the time. The Panther catalog is REALLY spotty. Some good stuff, a lot of crap, and rumor is, nasty legal people. (I think they're the ones who "convinced" Bill Lewis to take his vid review web site down) The DB set is the best they offer, IMO.
