  • The Real Martial Artists Stand Please

I have a question that i wanted to ask..hope all of you will answer..drop a word or two..
How bout masters(paper or real ones who got certificates) who has never engaged in streetfights but excel in sparring..will you consider them real martial arts masters..especially in the FMA. I know some, here and in teh Philippines, who has the title of master or punong guro..but has never engaged in real hand to hand combat..what can you say about this..just wonderin?

Depends. What are they claiming to be a "master" of? If they're claiming to be "master instructor" and they can teach incredibly well, then I say it's fitting. If they're claiming to be a "master sparrer" and they spar incredibly well, then it fits. If they're claiming to be a "master fighter" and have never fought ... then that's a problem.

sorry, but i just posted something about this topic here

anyway, today a guy can call himself anything, and even in the philippines, but in some places he better be careful because there is a lot of people who will walk into a place and ask to spar with the teacher or the advance people. and if you own a place you dont want people to hear that you refused.

also, most of the people today who sparr for sport should not get disrespected because some of them have a lot of courage speed and pain tolerance. its not easy to fight a match like in the old style, and especially here when a guy will call the police to come and talk to you. people get there feelings hurt very easy today, but the best you can do is get as many matches that you can.

another thing, i am a filipino to, and i can tell you, most of the people who talk about these death matches they had, most of those sotries are made up. yes many matches are with contact, but the people (even in the 1950s) had rules they have to agree on, and the fight only went until one guys wrist was broken, or he gave up, but then 20 years later they both say they won, and they both killed the other guy, and they forgot that there was actually rules. ;-)
