  • Whats the point of stickfighting? Are you going to carry it around with you??

God I hate this ignorant question, but it is too common. No I never plan to carry around my kali sticks everywhere I go, thats not the point.

From my understanding, sticks were used as subtitiutes for knives and swords so that you could live to train more than once. The sticks are simply tools to achieve better timing, reaction time, distancing, and body mechanics. A stick flying at your face 100mph is going to make Joe Bob's haymaker look like slow motion in a bar.

All the stick techniques and body mechanics translate into empty hands, the gunting, passing, strikes, footwork, everything. They are tools to develop your attributes to a higher level and they will. Think of it as a weighted poncho that grapplers wear to increase their shot, speed, and stamina. When they push themselves further and then take it off, they are that much better.

I have only seen one person in my live, Grandmaster Taboada, who could give an opponent a knive, have them put on a shin and instep guard, spar, and every time he touched their hand the knife would disarm straight into their foot. EVERY TIME. It takes years of training, and dedication to develop attributes of that caliber.

All he teaches his students for the first entire year or more is the eight count with a single stick. The foundation is the most important part.

    Let me add this.

And one more thing..... Sticks is just a thing.. when you are on the street the sticks you've trained with could be anything..... just a pice of wood you find, a metal pipe, car antenna.... kinda like anything...... as you know there is stuff with 3 lenghts (short, medium, long (Knife, Kali stick, Bo staff).... so it's just anything you find :-) :-D

    Peace dudes!

I hear what you are saying but if some sh*t is about to go down, you cant start looking around for a tireiron or a piece of wood because the chances are an ideal stick like object will not be in grasp. You are much more likely to find a fork, pen, chair, dinner plate, anything can be used as a weapon if you use it as one.

But one thing is for certain, anytime you look on your boot you will always find a kershaw blackout folding knife...oh wait, thats just me

Well... I was thinking about street fight's ya know :-)
Like.. if someone is ****ing with ya on the parkinglot.. then a car antenna should be clos to ya... if someone is messing with ya in the park.... well.. maby you find a tree branch or maby a metal stick from a broken fence nearby..... well... as said.. anything can be used.

        Peace out

And... some people do carry around telescopic batons, nunchaku, belts, knifes, canes, those little Filipino short sticks etc.

As soon as your threat alert (or whatever awareness system or lack of you use ....) goes up a notch, you be prepared to grab a weapon, of any kind.

Oh I hear you. You are definately right. I know some old FMA Grandmaster would walk with canes people thought because of their feeble old age and weakness. Some punk tries to rob them and he finds out thats not the reason for the cane, but its far too late then.

I like to know exactly where my knife is if I were to ever need. Its always on my boot, I never leave home without like a Mastercard.

                  Speaking of mastercard.....

you can sharpen the edge or corner(s) of your credit cards/bank cards and if your blade work is good, you have a mini-knife you can carry in public anywhere, including planes.

good way to sharpen them is with a nail file.

I have random weapons on me at time to time, depending. Coming home from work = tactical folder on my hip (for cutting rope and bags and shit at work....) etc.

Exactly, there are ASP batons, palm sticks, 18" or shorter sticks, the Impact Kerambit, the Stinger, folding knives, etc.

I love my steel toed Doc Martens. Literally brass knuckles for your feet. I've been tied up standing grappling with guys before and two kicks to the shins and thats the beginning of the end.

                            umm..I walk with my stick

I walk and drive with my stick. I take the stick to work with me, in my office, walking up the street to lunch, etc. Reason being that if there is trouble that can't be avoided, I want to practice.

The single stick is the medium for most of the FMA. It is probably the skill that will translate to most weapon connection. Actually, knife is probably the most realistic self defense variable to train, but too much FMA train unrealistic knife work(not all, just too much). Double stick, and long and short are more of the art(it can be usefull and effective) but it's more for the long time FMA student or one that tweaks on the sticks.

Not enough time is placed on empty hand. It is too often taken for granted that the hands will do what the sticks are doing, but not much practice backing it up.

                            Keep Swinging,

Did you make the keychain/cash thing yourself? It sounds like a good idea!

I'm thinking of getting a kobutan as a keychain and apply my Kali/FMA/martial knowledge to it when needed.
