I have random weapons on me at time to time, depending. Coming home from work = tactical folder on my hip (for cutting rope and bags and shit at work....) etc.

Well yes stick training is good it makes you faster as far as hand speed the other side of that is that you also can see faster second like someone said that the mecanics of the motions that you learned with the stick really help also the blocks all translate to empty hands. now my kail teacher sifu Mark "Mongrel" Balluf who also teaches JKD and JKD concets showed me how all the weapons translate to empty hands. not to slam on anyone and or their teacher but that to me and to all the ppl that i train with is a dumb question not ur fault though because you teacher or senior students should have told or showed you that. but there are many things that you get from the sticks and knife training and it should all make sense empty handed

win or lose expericence is everything

Sticks are great! They are a great exercise and also develop the arms.

Well you KNOW the purpose of learning kali is you can counter someone who has a stick, knife, or sword. Some good FMA artists use this weapons to train that's make Filipinos Tough! Mabuhay

                READ THIS....

Listen, I didn't even read any responses to this question, but I will tell you the reasons of "why we should train with sticks."

First, the stick only enhances ones skills, motor skills, hand, eye cordnation, total body movement, etc...example, if you can parry, block or move out of the way of a 70-90 mph stick strike. Then you can parry, block or move out of a 30-40mph punch or kick.

Second, maybe you might not carry your sticks but anything can be used as a weapon, or a club type weapon. This is a no shit story. I was sitting in a store parking lot, waiting for my wife to come out from shopping. I seen two guys arguing, then one guy pulls out a baseball bat and starting chasing the other around a car. The store was selling brooms and had a bucket of broom handles out on the sidewalk. The guy running grabbed a broom handle and defended himself with it. The point to the story you may not carry your sticks but someone out there will be carrying some type of stick/club weapon. Then you can use your stick training to disarm or defend yourself and maybe save your life.

Third, you may carry some type of stick. Such as a cane or walking stick and it would be nice to use it if ever needed, besides keeping your balance.

Fourth, you may not carry sticks on you but you can have them in your car. If needed, one can get them and use them to defend themselves if needed.

I hope these are good enough reasons for you to train with a stick. Then good luck if ever your attacked with this type of weapon and don't have the skills to defend your self or your family.

I have a bunch of questions on this. I am new to jkd and to ma. I do have a video on knife weapons fighting by joe maffei. He illustrates using a knife, rubber hose, tire iron , screwdriver and even his belt, shirt or jacket (whipping it around like nunchacku.)

Is the principle basically the same ie. either a cutting object like a knife, a swinging object like a tire iron or a jabbing object like a screwdriver just depending what you're carrying or what you happen to pick up?

Do most ma's try to carry a weapon or are they confident enough in their empty hand to counterattack?

How often does a fight turn to weapons and how do you best defend against them if you don't have any?

Lastly- Can anyone explain the ddifference between Kali, Silat, Dumog and Grappling (I'm sure there a re a few more I missed?)

                  Thanks

I have trained in arnis and eskrima for two years so I am no I am no expert on it. I have a friend who practices Kali and arnis/eskrima so whenever he comes sees me we get the sticks out and he teaches me new stuff. I practice sporadically.

He keeps sticks in his car for protection but he also does concealed carry (firearm). I always carry a knife. The only training I have had with a knife I received from Uncle Sam while in the military. The instruction was brief but good with skill practice t/o the 6 years I was on active duty.

I do keep my sticks (arnis) next to my bed for protection. I'd rather use them than my knife. I do have guns but I also have curious kids so I keep my firearms out of reach. I also stopped carrying concealed for fear one of my kids gets a hold of my gun if I got lax.

In reply to what's the point of learning the stick or arnis when you don't even carry it with you all the time ?

In my own opinion, it is not only the stick or arnis that you can rely to defend your self from the danger any where you are but,
it is what you have learned in handling and learning how to use the arnis to defend your self, the way you swing your arnis against the on coming another stick of you opponent or a knife of your opponent that you would not even have the chance to grab
any knife, stick or what ever, therefore, that is the time that you will start using your hand, swing your arms to poke , swing your arm to block like the stick and slice your opponent like you are using
the arnis also. That is why, if you are a martial artist...I would suggest that you should also learn the Pilipino arnis and master the "SINAWALI", because from this you would understand what I am saying regarding the use of your hands and arms in the absence of the arnis, kris, tabak or sinturon sa bak-bakan.
I hope this help you brother in the martial arts, to understand the
                      why of the arnis.
                      Salamat sa iyo,
You may call me Kuya AL or SALUBONG
