duels

It seems that if you study FMA long enough, you hear about duels to the death being fought in the Phillipines. It seems like we have a few Filipinos posting here now, and I'm wondering about the truth to these. Are they still being fought? How often? For what reasons?

no there are no duels now between masters of the art......but there are still plenty of fueds that start and sometimes weapons such as itak, pinuti kampilan will be used

The problem with news about duels here is the natural progressing from fact to rumor and vice versa.

Sometimes you hear about some incident and later it sounds more like a rumor until you're not really sure if it did happen.
The country still has a lot of remote area where news filters out so very slowly.

But this much is true: visiting guros from abroad have been challenged. I don't know the extent of the challenge (fight to the death i.e. patayan or just a friendly match) but they are challenges none the less. And I won't identify who was challenged.

A great source of FMA stories are the Philippine Marines Force Recon units. They're trained in Pekiti Tirsia and they've used it in clashes with rebels on Mindanao. It's been a battle between the Marines' ginuntings and the rebels' barongs and so far the Marines are kicking some ass down South. One captured rebel reportedly said they're rather be shot than hacked to death with a ginunting.

i have to disagree on that he marines are not kicking ass down south

they have done notthing in the last 20years sure they might win the skirmish in pikit north cotabato

but still they have not won until the last moro has laid down
our christian militia groups such as the Subanen Liberation Army in zamboanga are growing we have the numbers by far on the moros and with jesus on our side we will win in the end................................

I meant from a FMA, combat-with-bladed-weapons-in-the-jungle context. At least the Marines aren't sitting ducks anymore when caught in a barong ambush.
