  • FMA practitioners, what's it like in your classes ?

Are the Kali classes intense ? Meaning do you guys do body workouts and such ? I never been in one, actually i was going to go until my parents saw my report card.... and

Depends on the club/group you're training with.

In our group we do more intense stuff than drilling.

          Yes Arnis training is intense.
But we don't do sqat or pushing ups.....

at least 50% of the training is on forms, lots of low stances..... then comes footwork: evasions, lots of shifts from high to low positions and reverse.... no need for sqats.......

sqats and all other "excercises and stretching" should be done by the practitioner in his own time at his own discrition..

eskrima training with a master is usually on a one on one basis (this is what i do) or very few students. its straight on to training usually most systems will finish off with sparring....

              Yes, you are right escrimador....
              We finish with sparring....

There is no need to waste precious time with a GM in calistenics.... or running.... it is obvious one should do that alone....
Actually serious students should already have done warming ups before starting training .....

We usually start off with footwork. Lots of it. Squats and duckings are incorporated within the footwork. This is the part where you will hate footwork. (but I love it) Ranging footwork also is done while the instructor is swingin hard at you and you have to evade. Sidestepping is also done with duckings while our Guro thrusts and swings hard.

Holy crap, what did you mean swing The Kali Stick at you hard and YOU HAVE TO AVOID IT !? Ouch if so that gonna hurt man!

Also, will I get stronger, as in physically ? Or will I just get improved skills with going to classes and no extra training at home ?

What can I do at home if I am not training at the moment ?

Currently all I am doing are pushups, I stopped doing squats and any other leg exercises, and some small ab workouts. Thats about it, and I have a pair of sticks sitting around...

Yup, I love the swinging part. It pushes me to my limits.

Of course you will get stronger. It really depends on how you train. I also train at home.

Try doing basics strikes and footwork.

So you better be quick in docking otherwise get a cracked skull. Just kidding. The swinging of the stick isn't really directed at us but it gives us reason to move faster. Its more of a simulation, incorporating reality into training. We train as if we're in a real fight.

As for the squats ang docks, those are important drills if you are on to strengthening your legs. You are not about to fight just standing in one place aren't you?

Improvement in strength, endurance & the like is inevitable, especially if you are regularly performing the basic exercises/drills/forms.

If you want some basic & simple home programs for Kali, PM Veynn.

Don't let those sticks sit in one corner, swing 'em. Geez, I wish I could swing the sticks as hard as Veynn.

Veynn, thanks for the Stick Exercise list you sent me. Decreased the repetitions to 20 from 30 though.

I'm in the same class as alqhiqeurass and yes the stick strikes are meant as "motivation". If the guro swinging that sticksat us horizontally during a ducking drill, we are "motivated" to get out of the way by ducking. It's as simple as that.

It's amazing how people are driven to perform better with just a little extra motivation..

                        our class is like this:

20 to 30 minutes of footwork drills

after that, the class is split into beginner and intermediate. the beginners are put through strikes and combinations while the intermediate students work on previous techniques, either knife or stick based.

30 minutes before the end of the class, the beginners swap their sticks for training knives and go through knife drills.

We used to end the class with dumog but we're still waiting for our mats before we go back to finishing the class with empty hand drills.

One thing I will add is that, As I'm sure you all are aware,Both hands should operate the same. In other words what you can with your right hand you should be able to do with your left. My sifu is quite strict on this point. Drill, Drill, Drill.
