I dont know mucha bout knive fighting techniques. But I find gripping the knive at hells grip and just having it as an extension for punching works good. What do you cats think??

Go over to a FMA club and ask them about it. I wouldn't agree with your statement. I would use a push dagger as an extension of a punch. Other than that, blade combat doesn't resemble an armed boxing match. In the very unlikely event that a knife on knife encounter occurrs, a hammer grip or saber grip would be superior to a hell or icepick grip because of the added reach and versatility the former grips offer. This is all well and good, but in reality, you probably won't get to choose what grip you want, it'll just be the one you end up with the quickest.
