Well, as I understand it, "guru" comes from two old sanskrit words. One means "darkness", the other means "light." The implication is that a "guru" is one who leads others from darkness into light. This can be applied to anything from martial arts, linguistics, math, spiritualism, etc. But, basically, it means "teacher."
I assume (though could be wrong) that "guro" comes from the same root but is just a different pronunciation (and, by extension, has become spelled differently over the years).
