I got one tape, on which Jerson Tortal is deminstrating techniques together with Leo T. Gaje, both are titled as Grandmasters, the art shown is PTK. In fact they are family, and like in every family...
From my understanding they are basically the same system. PTK being the family system and DTK being renamed by certain members of the Tortal family. Grand Tuhon Gaje is the head of the PTK family. So basically they are the same, just a different name.
Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the delayed response as I was away teaching a Sayoc Kali seminar in Poland, and I am only now just starting to catch up on all the forums.
Grand Master Tortal and his son, teach Dekiti Tirsia Siradas. I had the opportunity to meet and train with the Grand Master, several years ago with Professor Tom Sotis. The seminar focused on their version of the Abcedario, which is different the the Pekiti Tirsia Abcedarios from the 64 attack series, Aldabon - their short blade system(which is very much like the older version of PTK), and finally alot of work on the step out and counterattack the arm, similar to the first contrada in PTK.
There are two versions of Pekiti Tirsia Kali currently being taught,
1) Master William McGrath's - this is what was taught from the 70's - late 80's, by GT. Gaje. It emphasized the 64 attack series, contradas, recontradas, and seguidas as well as the short blade, weapon retention and disarming.
2)Grand Master Leo Gaje - Tirsia Methodology(Still called Pekiti Tirsia Kali) - GT. Gaje has reveamped the PTK system and now emphasizes Pamuno tirsia(basic strikes) Palipas tirsia, triplicado offensiva, tirsia triplicado, QOL etc, etc. He also retains the Contradas, and recontradas, seguidas.(I may be wrong but that is what it looks like)
As for who to study with? I would check out both and see which one fits your style of movement and personality, then join in the training. I do know that GT Gaje is teaching a lot of seminars here in the states, and GT Tortal will be coming back to the states in March or so of next year.
