  • Judo Part 2

What are the most effective techniques for beginner level competition? I ask because I have found most good grapplers focus on perfecting a limited number of techniques rather than just learning tons of techniques.

Is it realistic to just work on 3 throws/takedowns and perfect them and expect to do well in competition?

Actually I would learn as many throws as you can because that is the only way you will find out what works for you. You never know, maybe the throw you suck at right now may become your best technique with a little work.

If you only focus on a few then you are limiting your potential, the best Judoka know lots of throw but use a chosen few for competition that they have grown into over years of practice.

I would learn your basics, Ippon Seionage, O Soto Gari, O uchi gari, O' Goshi and work up from there.

A good Judoka will do only a few most of the time but when the opertunity is there they can use any
Or the others can be used to setup for the favourite technique

I think it's good to learn the techniques of the sport but lets face it not all of them you will be able to make work well. So you learn allot of them find the ones you like and can make work effectively then use those as your bread and butter.

But if you don’t' learn the many techniques that judo has to offer then you'll be shorting your self because there may be some moves that you would be great at but never be able to use 'cause you never learned them and practiced them.

So learn them grasshopper and find the ones that work well for you! You will be a better competitor for it.

My first ippon! It was freaking cool. Now if I can just bust it out in the next randori....

standing armlocks are legal. You can't throw someone with an armlock though because it doesn't give them time to tap out before being injured.

I thought they were banned from competition because people were ending up with broken elbows in International comps.

I'll check it out on Judoinfo.com and see what I can find.
