I agree never to snap a punch against air, bags, people or Auntie Matilda's wig.
Snapping can give the impression of being "fast", especially against thin air. And it is. But you cannot instantly stop an object flying through space. It slows to a stop. It will strike the target whilst it is slowing, hence reducing the power.
What about those nerds who buy specially made Gis with "built in snap!". They're too busy trying to impress other dojo members with a whipping sound, than actually learning how to perform better.
Doh!

Bri that sound of the gi will more likely occur if you stop the punch instead of snapping it back strait away
gyalu and oi or jun tsuki will produce this in basics but the tobi komi tsuki's ( jab like punch) rarely do
dono why you would expect it to snap more on the latter but in practice it doesn't
And Wado karateka are masters at snap puching ( reason why they do good at WKF tournaments)

So, I was about to say that if snap punches were effective, then boxers would use them... then it occured to me that your description of a 'snap punch' sounds a lot like a left jab. Correct, or no?

snap means retracting stait after contact, as opposed to Shotokan leave it out there for a splitsecond
It doesn't mean retract before
Or do you have a different definition Bri?
Don't confuse that which looks cool against thin air with that which hurts. The are two very different things. This whole issue is merely one of the many reasons why mainstream Karate sucks as a fighting art.

Yes a jab is a snap punch
So is a right strait punch
As for hurting, Why do I have to keep telling about the guy who still felt the effect of the revers punch snapstyle after 2 weeks?
And this wasn't one of my adapted punches it was textbook basic reversepunch from stance
let's take an example with kicks, sidekick, my trainingspartner would drive it through and kick someone on his behind but the kicked peron could fight on strait away
I would retract it yhe moment I hit their belly becausee I did not want to damage them and still that would leave them gasping for air
I know it isn't damage but it is effect, it would give me the oppertunity to finish the oponent off whereas my partners opponent would roll backwards and stand up to fight on
Oh and one more thing peronally I think bone on bone snappunches might be safer for the puncher
Think of the old bareknucklefighter, how they would fight, mostly snap punches
Of coarse when wearing gloves, everything changes they will absorb most of the energy of a snappunch
Same for hitting targets protected by a layer of fat, the more fat the less effective a snappunch will be
Against a sumotori, a snappunch would beel like dust falling on him
Bri, you have to admit that snappunches as used in pointsparring is at least more dynamic than most of the rest of karate

Have you seen Pancrase fights, no gloves only palmheelstrikes, of wich most are done in a snap style
John Sullivan early bareknuckle fighter and boxer was punching snapstyle when bareknuckled, this only changed after he started fighting in gloved matches
Boxingstyle punches are much more powerfull without a doubt but they are also more potentialy damaging to your own body when done without gloves
therefore snapstylepunches have there use outside pointsparring too
