  • Something to think about

I was thinking today and I pose a question to evryone that is against kata, as a training tool. I am against it as well or I was until I read something today.

In boxing you shadowbox right? What else is throwing punches and kicks into the air then a kata in itself? Seems to be alomst the same thing to me, only thing ou could say is that it is less drilled, as to, you throw punches kicks and elbows and so on in different succession. But there isnt that many combos. It still isnt as drilled as a kata is but pretty closely related.

No. I want to laugh at you.

Kata - a pre determined long long combination of robotic movement.

Shadowboxing - a fluid, smooth and totally unrehearsed activity involving spontanteity.

Yeah! Pretty closely related! HAW HAW HAW!

Not quite. Most shadowboxing that I've done during my Muay Thai phase was a series of combinations. Same for other guys I've met from other gyms. One friend who is a competitive kickboxer has his coach call out attacks and defenses when he does it, otherwise he finds himself only doing his favorites. What it really comes down to is hitting air is hitting air. And I finally break my streak of agreeing with Thai Bri!

You can only do some many combinations untill you are doing the same ones again.

Its basically the same thing. Throwing moves into the air. You are still learning to hit the air no matter what you say.

I too agree with a lot that you say Thai Bri but sometimes you must just admit you are wrong.

What a sily boy. If you are doing this, then you are not shadowboxing. So get back into your streak.

Shadowkiller - you are not learning to hit the air in shadowboxing, because you should not be hitting hard. In fact many boxers don't even throw the full technique, they just perform the initial body movement. In shadowboxing, you are learning to hit with spontanteity.

I rarely use it. If you have something or someone to hit, it is better to do that. And, if you just want to warm up, hit them softly.

Long time readers of the forum will have seen me admit when I am in the worng. But I rarely have to do so, as it rarely happens!

LOL When you FEEL you are wrong.

Seriously, Bri I have a question for you I meant to post in the previous thread. I know your feeling of kata, but your arguments confuse me becuase kata are not used for fight training, rather focus, balance and learn techniques. I may have just been fortunate, but no school I trained at focused on Kata for fighting. We did Kata and we did free sprring and shadow boxing etc. So I understand your point but forms/Kata are not used in that context, again at least not what I have studied.

              Just my 2 cents

So, NOT for fight training....... but for focus, balance and learn techniques?

                      Focus for what?
                      Balance for what?
                      Learn techniques for what?

Hmmm, as the teacher puts on on the the pointy dummy hat and tells me to sit outside the classroom. Sigh...yes all for fighting

Seriously, I just meant it is a small aspect of training. You train in kata to learn balance and technique and fucus and yes kata are done with visualization so it is just not empty. But I have never interpreted kata=fight ability. When I do kata, it usually somewhere between average and OK. Now win I spar with people or some "champion Kata" people I wipe the floor with them. That's what I mean, for the 2 korean arts I study, that has been the case, ist it that other karate styles are spending great amounts of time doing kata? just curious

But the technique in Kata is so very different to that required in a real go. Same as for focus and balance. So I now see that you agree with me - Kata trainng is actually detrimental to training for a real fight!

                          Another convert.

                            Hey Bri,

Do you skip rope in training?

Were you abused by a kata as a child?
