well if u have never heard of ed parker, i guess i can tell u a lil bit then
u know who bruce lee was right?...well ed parker was the bruce lee of karate. he took as many different karate forms and styles that he knew, got rid of the fancy movments, and put in killing moves and practical moves. kenpo actually started at the ww1 or ww2 im not sure....but it was taguht the japanese to use against the enemey. it was something that a traditional form couldn't handle. it's a very hard style. and it can definetly get u into shape. but more importantly it works. just don't take the tracy system....his is watered down considerably.....make sure u find a good student...im fortunate enought to have found a man that has been doing american kenpo for over 43 yrs! he studied with mr parker and some of his students as well...hopefull u like what u hear and if u dont then there are tons of other arts that will probably be a good fit for u then

art or mind

As a martial artist and what I know is that the pros and cons are not in the art itself but in the body and mind of he or she who apply the art or style.
All martial arts are good as they are bad its up to him who devote himself to the style.
There are so many styles now these days and often be compared what should be the best of all, the best of all is what lies inside yourself not in the style.
Remember that it's better to be smart rather then to be strong.

what works??
Originally posted by HandtoHandI have no clue exactly what kind of kempo i did. I know that i went to a "masters" (name of place) studio. Anyways i though that overall it was okay, but some of the strikes/techniques i dont see ever working.
There are so many styles in the art of Kempo.
The most of them are very old and often much of there techniques are lost with the time and the ancestors.Kempo is a way of life and life needs a certain understanding. When you practise an art you will always have thoughts on if strikes are techniques are working are not but the basics of kempo are not questioning can I beat him with these strike are not, because no reason to beat him, reason to avoid a fight is is much more valuble in kempo than to beat one.
Every art will have some strikes that might be not so in use but thats just the art you learn it and become part of it. I know students that have a hard time to get the essence of some strike with the hands while on the other hand a strike with the leg they see the essence and so reverse well thats the art of study what is in your life usefull and less usefull. That's the nicest thing on martial arts specially Kempo it's a never ending story.
good luck
