My master just knocked a guy out and almost broke the 2nd guy's arm before the police arrived in a self defense. He is 60.

Any breathing exercise must be executed correctly.
I'm certainly not going to breath in too deeply with all this bullshit around.

i am currently studying the naihanchi 1,2 and 3 kata. i use some of the movements and also base my classes on the principles and techniques these kata contain.

effectiveness? i think so - if - you keep the movements simple and to the point. we train the movements in a progressive resistance drilling and sparring so you get to develop a feel of sinking in a solid technique without the slappy tappy stuff that is often seen in most sparring.

in fact i'm still in the middle of writing a student manual on based these kata with training and drill examples taken directly from the kata.

dillman's style has the best understanding of it for my money.

        sanzan
        related to china white crane
        replaced fists with palm stricks

          personal level

Now I cannot say that kata works for everyone and al purposes.
I did not invent kata so all I can go on is the several things teachers have trained me about them. I only know two. A variation of nahainchi(thans for the name Nothingness, I saw it at a local school and thought they said Naifanchin)
and another i do not know the name of(that teacher stressed practice not labels).

But for me kata allows the integration of mind, body and spirit. Kind of like meditation. But its in the movements of a particular martial art.
I do not presume to say it helps fight, but it does keep me centered as a being and keeps my energy harmonious. Which I think would help in all situations.

          just mytwo cents

I am not interested in the elegance of kata in itself. I clearly understand your point, but I think that you need to see the way NCK practicioners execute the katas. I am interested in looking at Karate's katas to understand the essence of the movements.

Your art by chance wouldnt have a strong chinese influence, would it?
Sounds like wu-yi-quan a bit. or Pa Kua?
            Just asking.

It is actually a Chinese art. The official name is Nan Shao Lin Wu Zu He Yang Quan, translated to be Southern Shaolin Five Ancestors Fist with the teacher He Yang.

If I am not mistaken, the Okinawan calls it Naifanchi, the Japanese calls it Naihanchi.

In my most humble opinions, the katas should be the blueprint of your art. It should show the right movements, including the correct power deliveries.

                Thanks for the information.
Just the name you gave and some of the description you gave sent off clues.
I dont really have a name for our art. But teacher Ofuda says its a mix of okinawan goju with some jujutsu and shorinji kenpo blended in.

Thing is when I was studying under my friend Kenji's father four years ago, what we do now darn near mirrors it.
I spent four years of traveling and money to try to find another teacher I was comfortable with and which the art felt good to my instinct.

And just so happened an old high school friend was studying in a rural area like an hour or 90 minute drive from my home. After visiting onmy off days for several weeks and trying out, and seeing its similarities to the past I decided to stay. We dont really have rankings, its more of an informal environment.

Ofuda teaches three different types of training. For those looking for health they do the katas and yoga. For those looking for pure fighting he teaches more of a self defense based curriculum. No katas but lots of kumite and some of the newer reaction based philosophy.

Like people coming from behinda tree or shed attacking with hands orother items and the defender attempting to defend.

I study the third. which is a mixture of the above two.
Its really hard, and I had to decrease snacking and increase water and start eating fresh fish.

It works very well. I have been suicidal several times in my life, and the four years of training previously and past three months have freed me from depression.

I am glad that your martial arts training helps you to manage your life.

If you want more info on the art, go to the Chinese forum under Ngo Cho Kun. A lot of Okinawan Karate Masters went to Fujian (Fukkien) province in the past to learn martial arts. Ngo Cho Kun is a Fujian art, it is the official martial arts of Southern Shaolin now.

A lot of people have a thesis naming that Wuzuquan, or at least Baihequan (White Crane Kungfu), one of the 5 roots of Wuzuquan, is the root of Okinawan Karate.

Which part of the world do you live?

I will make sure to look into Ngo Cho Kun. I would like to see how you guys practice and move. Like you I want to learn about essence of all arts.
Heck I wonder if there was one original set of principles that branched out as man spread over the earth. Like the okinawa-te split into many different styles.

Well all of the research I have done pretty much names White Crane as the proponent to original okinawan styles. Just that in Shoto and some other hard line japanese styles a lot of the energy and grappling were taken out.

I have wondered if an okinawan say Naha-Te practicioner came upon a say what is now japanese aikijujutsu/jujutsu practicioner (yes I know thats EXTREMELY FARFETCHED) what the battle would encompass.

I remember reading about how... I'll have to find the book and post it, two jujutsu fighters supposedly battled and one used kicks to the knee as opposed to just the normal grappling/locks and killed his opponent after surprising him.

I live in the middle southern part of the us.
guess thats why I searched so hard to find something I wanted to learn.
we have mostly sport martial arts school here. and although they work for their purposes, when I trained there as a young teen I did not feel instinctively like I belonged.

no doubt the reaction/street smart/BJJ/Krav Maga/CQB stuff works for pure self defense, but I was looking for more in addition.

thanks for the redirect to the Ngo Cho Kun

                      it was very informative.
I may be interested to maybe train in it because it seems like it would blend well with my current training..
ki , forms and defense ...

now my question is, what didnt come from Fukien/fujian White Crane?
