hey, i just wanted to know what ju jutsu is. Since there are no close ninjutsu dojos near me, i figured i might as well try something else. what does ju jutsu involve? Is it almost all grappling like bjj?

BJJ is Brazilian Ju jitsu
Ju jitsu is from japan. It involves joint locks, takedown, joint manipulation and throws. -
JJ is spelled in many different ways but the current CORRECT translation from Japanese to English is JU JUTSU.
Ju Jutsu can be anything from :
Modern western systems - usually spelt Ju Jitsu or jiu jitsu
= These are quite often combination styles with karate, kickboxing and Judo often being incorporated with JuJutsu basics. In my experience these schools tend to have lttle actually useful content - as they only have the very basics from the different area.
Traditional Japanese Ju Jutsu
These are the purest forms of the art and thus have the highest level of technical proficiency. But they can sometimes have too much etiquette and unrealistic practice - MAINLY in 'traditional' schools in the west. But the main schools in Japan produce very hard guys with a very high level of skill. These schools generally encorporate - throwing, locking, punching, kicking etc. They generally do not have Kata in the karate sence of the word, but do have set attack and defence routines as well as free figthing.
BJJ - a development of traditional Japanese Ju Jutsu created by the Gracie family after studying traditional Ju Jutsu. Focus is on Ground fighting, taken from and TJJ and addapted for the sport competition format.

Depends what you want it for really.
It is a perponal choice.
I have found Japanese JJ gives me all the tools i need - stand up and ground.
BJJ is a superlative groundfighting method - if thats what you want then go for that.
If you want some deeper aspects to the art (not just figthing) then maybe a Trad JJ school would be good.

Wow, I didn't realise there was actually a difference between ju jutsu and jiu jitsu. I thought they were just translation differences. I thought traditional ju jutsu contain none if any punches and kicks due to the history of ju jutsu and the reason of its development?Comment

yeh it is just a difference in translation. one is correct the other isnt.
As for the punching and kicking - it is there but is not generally used for procussive damage but rather to off balance an opponent.
punching someone wearing a steel helmet would be fairly stupid!
