hi all,
I will try and explain but for the record i dont do aikido (i do Daito Ryu JuJutsu) so i cannot definatively comment on this.
aikido works alot on the principle of entering onto someone if they attack, this serves many purposes, taking the opponents attacking options from them etc- When working with kicks this principle is very effective and is often combined with hand work applied to the face, kneck. etc (shedder style i suppose)
aikido is big on positioning yourself where you opponent does not like you to be. Instead of attacking stright ahead - aikidoka try to cercumvent attacks and position themselves to the side or back of the opponent.
regarding a low roundhouse.
lets try to imagin this.
An attacker throws a powerful low roundhouse to the left thigh area with the right leg - he will probably connect. there is no misconception here. but the point is to minimise the effect of the strike.
Aikido ka will step towards the outside of the attackers standing leg with their right leg, checking the hands of the kicker and throwing the kicker down using control of the face/head, neck, arms, standing leg hip etc etc.
The finish is fairly interchangeable but the disolving of the kicks power due to the entering and positioning of the aikidoka is very effective.
It is important to know that this is a fluid 1 movement process not a stop start stop start thing we often see in the likes of karate.
regarding stamping -
This is a similar process steping to the outside or inside of the kick with the non target leg. this requires a much higher level of skill due to the speed of the attack.
The problem is that with the many forms of aikido being practiced you will find some that practice and understand these methods and some that dont.
Some schools arent interested in Fighting, but some are, and do practice against kicks. In fact i know an instructor that paid a muay thai instructor from a local school to teach correct attacking methods so that they are not doing some flowery 'version' of a real attack.
As i am sure you are away though - this sort of school is not that common!
It may be better for me to demo what i mean and put it up. It will not be an exact aikido method though, would probably be a bit of daito ryu with some ba gua, tai chi , and hsing i thrown in!
anyways.
Cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris. Very well explained. I was told once, "If you're good, you can tell me and not have to show me." I appreciate it as that obviously took some time and thought to organize.

PS> If any Aikidoka's have anything to add, I'd definitely be curious.

aikidoka
well i am an aikidoka and i also train in boxing to get in shape and for fitness, anyway i think aikido is very effective if u can think fast , and it has a lot of techniques against kicks from every art, for example last week i took a tech, for the [marsh gari] from karate [i think thats how u spell it] it is pretty easy and effective no matter how u kick... but the problem with aikido is that it needs time to be good at it, so i am taking boxing till i get better in aikido to be able to use it in fights
