I am thinking about joining a Kendo do-jo about 60 miles from my house. I am wondering if any1 here has had any experience with this art, and if that was a good experience? (I am not joining Kendo for street fighting!!! it's just to comfort my fetish with swords)

What area of the country are you in? You might be able to find a Koryu instructor also. I have done Kendo, Eishen Ryu Iaido, and Itto ryu Kenjutsu. I am by no means an expert in any of them.
Using a shinai is no where close to the feel of using an actual blade. Dynamics are totally different.
If you are lucky and your instructor is an older fellow, many Kendo Sensei are also instructors in Iaido and Kenjustsu. Kendo does have some Kenjutsu kata but when I studied it we rarely practiced those. -

Go to www.chicagobudokai.com They have a link under affiliated dojo. Some of the listed dojo teach Tenshin ryu kenjustsu. Be forewarned that Kenjustsu schools are run much more formally than kendo schools. They tend to be selective of students and do not try to sell you on joining the school. Be polite, ask questions and don't ask how much classes cost. I would reccomend you do some research on Kenjustu in advance. You do need to be at least 18 for most of these type of schools.Comment
