Why do we play the style debate/ – when it is the stylist that makes the art effective!

When we compare one style to another, what parameters are we using?

When we have a Shotokan vs. a Muay Thai, who rules are we using?

When we take the Muay Thai vs. BJJ, who rules are we using?

In a sporting event it is he who makes the rules wins.
If we are talking about a life and death – street encounter, then we have to insert some other variables. In a real fight, there are no rules. I may do traditional MA, but I will be the first to utilize whatever tool/ weapon my environment provides in order to survive. We also have another variable called heart / determination / will to survive.

I am not defending Karate. All I am alluding to is that in real combat, there are factors that are not taught in a majority of systems that have been mention on this thread.

Once again it comes down to what the stylist goals – are you learning the art for combat, sport, self-enlightenment or a little of both?

I would argue that any martial art, if used correctly, will be useful on the street. Martial arts were created as systems of fighting. Are on the street and on the battlefield so different? Either way it's two combatants who are ready to harm eachother if necessary, and Karate has proven its abilities in that area many times.

          Any examples of this proof?

            yes.

A few years back, there was a video clip of a confrontation between a plain clothes police officer and a pimp (showed on Oprah and other TV programs) The police officer is a traditional martial artist, with many years experience but carries an unintimidating presence.

The pimp on the other hand is big and buff. When they meet, the pimp is beating a prostitute.

The off-duty police officer tells the guy to back away from the lady. The pimp escalates, starts moving toward the police officer and brings his right hand up.

Police officer slips outside and lands a knife hand strike to the pimp's neck. The pimp goes limp and falls to the concrete like a ton of bricks. The Police officer looks at the camera, shrugs his shoulders and walks away.

I don't have any examples on video tape or media, so I guess you'll just have to believe me: My friend does Karate. (it's not any particular style because the sensei uses several forms.)
We were walking downtown and there were some Muay Thai guys walkin down the street, and they saw him wearing a t-shirt that showed the name of his school, with the word "Karate" written on it clearly. They started messing with him and pushing him. Finally he warned them that they should stop, but they kept on doing it. He planted a reverse palm heel right on one of the guy's nose. He started bleeding and cursing, so he just walked away. Pretty whimpy, eh?
Well his friend wasn't too happy about it, so he tries to do roundkick to my friend's ribs. He blocks it and then
front kicks the MT guy right on the stomach, knocks the wind out of him, and then reverse-punched him in the sternum. The guy fell down, and then got up a few seconds later, unwilling to fight.

uhhhhuhh....I'm sure he used a downward forearm block to check that round kick to the ribs with ease

It was to the ribs, so I would say modified outward block
I see a lot of MT fighters that do not use the hips to the fullest, kicking most with the legs when doing anything higher than a lowkick

                      Whats so unrealistic about this?

Your question shows a little bit of ignorance, but that doesn't make you an ignorant person.

Hey the down block motion is one of my favorites against front and side kicks.

The downward parry works well against linear kicks that come straight in, the only problem is that it leaves your head open - I'd rather use an elbow check, unless you're goint to scoop the kick and sweep the guys supporting leg.

                            Against the thai kick?????

                            forearm vs. shin + bodyweight

                              never mind that kick.......

just Trading-Blows the opponent using NgoChoKun's Double Penetrating Uppercut (3times hitting to thaiboxers body and head)

then follow-up with the 7th-Star Praying Mantis Butterfly Kick to thaiboxer's Head (as a finishing blows)

                              Note:
the observers can't really believe what they see....... they will say "Impressive" !!!!!!!!

A down block against a ThaI kick (round) is a good way to get your arm broken!
