Both have history to daito ryu akijujutsu (though there is debate for HKD)
The techniques are similar but there is more kicking in HKD

Some of the technique differences from having the opportunity of training in both are:
1-Aikido does have strikes; it depends on what style that you practice.
2-Hapkido will have strikes. Strikes will also include kicks that are similar to TKD.
3-Aikido will not have breaking, but some Hapkido dojangs will have this.
4-Aikido will utilize the jo and boken.
5-Hapkido will utilize the cane, knife and rope.
6-Aikido has a greater emphasis on multiple attackers.
7-Throws and locks are very similar based on their shared history.
8-When you go to an Aikido dojo, they will teach Aikido. When you go to a Hapkido dojang, make sure that it is not a TKD school that only teaches Hapkido on the side.
You cannot go wrong with either art. They both have outstanding merits. Many times it comes down to the instructor and what your real needs are.

Agree with all above.
Also each appear to take their throwing and locking systems from different sections of the daito ryu aiki ju jutsu syllabus.
Aikido is mainly derived from the principles of the Aiki No Jutsu Wasa of daito ryu taking the primary techniques of the Hiden Mokuroku (shoden) and applying variation and aiki no jutsu principles to them as well as techniques direct from the aiki no jutsu wasa.
Hapkido seems to be based in the Ju jutsu section of the Daito ryu technical syllabus, principles basis from the shoden wasa, with little inclusion of the higher technical catagory principles taken from the likes of Aiki no justu, Goshi yo no te etc.

HKD also trains for multiple attacks, additional weapons are sword, fan, Bong(staff) and dan bong (short staff). Not preaching HKD over aikido just adding to your post.Originally posted by MADDOGComment
