Yup, I agree. It'll die down eventually... Although, I personally don't think there's anything really wrong about it. There is freedom of expression, unless you wear it as a form of disrespect.

There's lots of good reasons for "going along to get along" as long as it doesn't twist your guts emotionally, like this problem seems to be doing to you.

For instance, I dress a certain way at work because it's expected of me and because I don't mind complying with their expectations.

But if you're living some kind of double life just because you're afraid of what others will say or think about you or the way they'll treat you, then it's time to develop a little backbone or go somewhere where you're not surrounded by a bunch of stuck-up, close-minded prigs.

Your fellow students, who made you feel bad, have no business dictating how you're supposed to dress or behave if your actions are neither immoral nor unlawful, and your shihan had better remember that you have hired him and are paying him for instructions in specific skills, not to be ridiculed and humiliated. He is, in fact, your employee. Would you put up with that kind of disrespect from someone hired to teach you math or a foreign language?

Wear your ear ring proudly and whenever you feel like it. Take it off when you feel like it. It's none of their business! Screw 'em!

Just wear a dangling teddy bear, they'll forget all about that yin-yang thing.

That's lovely, but what you are telling him is to leave. If it's not his scene, that's cool, but too much of a teary "I can do what I want!" is not going to fly with any group, particularly in a contact-athletic context.

What I'm telling him is to stick up for himself OR leave - not let himself get coerced into living some kinda miserable double life 'cause he's afraid of what people will say or do. And you're right, a "teary "I can do what I want" pouting, petulant attitude is not the way to go. But you can certainly tell some asswipe who's behaving like some catty little be-atch to just step-off.

Now then, if the school has some specific rule about wearing any kind of jewelry during training (which would make a lot of sense to me), then he's in violation of an agreement he made when he signed up and the instructor (not those other bitches) needs to politely correct the student then move on, not join the other students by making some snide, passive-aggressive remarks that accomplish nothing.

I find nothing to disagree with there.
