In another forum, a teacher posted the question: "What is meant by BEING FIRST?" Got me stumped (which is his usual MO).

Pre-emptive striking, beating them to the punch, attacking on his preparation, intercepting....

Timing the delivery of a strike to precede your opponent's attempt to strike.
