  • Picking a martial art

I am 6'4 215 25 years old, former All East Tennessee in Football so I want something that will challenge me. I was trying to pick a martial art that would suit me the best. I don't want to take isshinryu, taekwando, etc. I want something real, etc. not alot of jumping and fancy stuff either. I took Jiujitsu for a little bit and when we sparred for the first time I wore a guy out that had been there for 2 years, so I don't want to take jiujitsu, I want something special that is really good. I took Isshinryu and Taekwando both when I was young and it was not really all that great, what does anyone think? I was also a golden glove boxer when I was younger. Thanks.

martial arts are not sports, get that straight , its not a matter of it being a sport, you dont have to play foot ball or be athletic to wear someone out in sparring , ive taken guys around yur build and im only 170 pounds at 5'10. try multiple opponents each at different stats ,then tell me if u get tired out , i could recommend one ,but you probably would make a mockery of it and call it not useful , but trust me it is . look around and find one that suits you , we are not here to tell you which is the best or most lethal, look and find a art for yourself .

if you really want a good one , message me and maybe ill give you the name or a few names of good ones ,that i find effective, even though the fights usually only last like 2-4 seconds between newbies and 1-4 minutes tops with pros , if they really wanna extend it . it just takes a second or less to knock someone out , .

for starters do some research on what martial arts best suit yur needs and or fighting habits, then you have yur answer

the thing i dont like is alot of sports oriented people take martial arts as a sport its not , especially a few of them that i studied ARENT SPORTS.

    well good luck searching

        grey-ninja,

I don't care if its sports oriented or not, I just want something thats real. I was just saying that I was not wanting something that flyes around and is for looks, if you know what I mean. I want something with tradition, pride, etc. I am a very driven person and a perfectionist, so I hope that helps. I want something that will test me, etc. test me alot Thanks.

I'd say get back to boxing since you were obviously good at that at one time. Also JKD impliments boxing. Capoeira or Kung Fu for tradition. BJJ for Pride or UFC.

TKD is also a very good standup martial art. People these days don't give it enough credit.

i recommend before learning a fighting style, learn Qigong then once you are experienced in hard and soft Qigong you will be able to make your own dsecision on wich martial art suites you best and decide then.

                          good luck.

thats a great idea IF you are a kid and you live in a temple, if you might need self defense in the near future, start with combatives, then if you want to invest more time and effort learn a TMA or mma whatever....
