  • Sparring Thread--An Analysis

This thread is for Traditional martial artist...........I'd like to hear your views on 1 step, 3 step and 5 step sparring. I learned 1 step sparring while taking tae kwon do. And I learned 3 step and 5 step sparring from Shotokan Karate. I teach private self defense lessons and yesterday, I introduce a novice student to 1,3, and 5 step sparring. I was pleasantly surprised. He loved it. I also do light sparring {ichicome}, point sparring and full contact continuous sparring in safety gear.

I just want to hear your views on these sparring techniques. Anybody here do something that I DID NOT MENTION?

I hate to display my ignorance, but I have to admit I'm not familiar with 1 step, 3 step, or 5 step sparring. What are they?

We do 3 step at junior level then move on to 1 step. I find it enjoyable and usefull.

I think 1,3,5 step sparring drills are a great way to introduce basic concepts and build attributes. As long as they are the means and not the ends. .
