  • Kuzushi for Uchi Mata

Anyone got any good setups, combinations, or off balancing too throw a good Uchi Mata.

I really like this throw, and am fairly good at it, I get it a decent amount, but I'm really looking to make this one of my go to throws.

90% of the time I throw Uchi Mata when the opponent is pushing into me hard. I know of one combination that starts with uchi mata, but I'm wondering about any that finish with Uchi Mata, and any other tricks on how to set up for a good one.

Personally, I don't like uchi mata but to answer your question it will depend on the size of your uke/enemy. Most of the guys at my school were fireplugs. (ie short with and average weight of 260lbs.) Which Kazushi do you know? Infinity is a good one, get him going one direction then suddenly change directions and go into your throw. Lightning may work good also, which is were you just go into the throw with lightning speed. I don't like uchi mata because it's the inside reap on the inside of the leg and only works good for me on tall lanky dudes.

The trick to Uchimata is a good Ko uchi gari! (Ko uchi gari to uchimata) combination techniques to set up the throw you like is a basic concept for good Judo. PRACTICE! If THAT fails you can go from Uchimata to Tani otoshi.

Just a couple of my favorite "go to" throws.... Enjoy.

The first throw is almost always a feint or false attack to set up the uke for the real attack!

You might get more responses from people if you used the English name for your technique. Some people, like myself, aren't the greatest in Japanese and don't find knowing the Japanese name essential to good technique.

Throw me a bone here... Whattya talking about?

          Uchimata = inner thigh throw...

Ko uchi gari = minor inside reap...

          Tani otoshi = Valley drop...

See I dont really know the japanese that much either, but I know Uchi Mata... I also dont really care about learning the things, but I think its alot easier to say Uchi Mata, than *checks tantos post* "inner thigh throw"... I dont know.

Oh and Tanto, a Kosoto Gari is a small outside reap, Kouchi Gari is a small inner reap.

Assuming in your first post, that you meant Kosotogari when you put KouchiGari, how would that work. I cant see putting these two throws together in a combination, unles... maybe if I switched the KosotoGari sweeping foot... to....

I'm gonna leave it here and go "shadow Judo"....

Got me! LOL Blame my poor notes... No I meant inside reap...

Kouchigari If you fake the reap to his front foot he takes the weight off of it right? Now he's ready for Uchimata! Switch before he can adjust again. Go try it!

Okay, Im thinking if I am standing right foot forward, I try to sweep his right foot (from the inside) with my right.. he unweights and moves so he doesnt get swept, his left leg is forward, I plant the right foot, bring my left footback, hike his now left leg, forward leg, up with my right foot, and throw uchi mata.

That makes sense right, he might be too far back though after having stepped too avoid the sweep.

Maybe if I attacked, small outside reap, with a left leg forward, then inside, then uchi mata...

                Wow, possibilities...

My left leg attacks his right with a small outside reap, he moves, I move, my right attacks his right with a small inside reap, he moves, I throw uchi mata.

                Exceeeeeeeeeeellllennttt...

                  ....................

O kay, I'm going to try. The only thing you do is get him to spread his legs apart with your right foot. His right foot steps to his right and he plants it. At that moment you have your right foot behind his (following it)... NOW the only thing you do is turn to your left and sweep rearward for Uchimata. Think of the kouchigari as "chambering" before you turn in to sweep his left leg from the inside. Done! Down he goes!

                    Just do it!

I'm not saying that's the only way to do it, of course. Whatever works for you!

Yeah I'm gonna try a few things out see what works, or I might just go back to throwing flying armbars all the time.

Thats actually one of my best moves.

I didn't realize it was the Japanese language. LOL. I just look at it as judo talk. I've heard it so much, I never considered it talking in Japanese. I know a ton of judo terms. Now ask me about spanish and I really get excited. LOL
