Eh...I don't know...I've got the higher altitude, but lower percentages...he's got the lower altitude and higher percentages...we probably meet up pretty close. Either way...it's a bad contest to make, because I do drink to the point of alcohol poisoning if I'm not paying attention...because I don't feel too messed up until it really hits me.

I have done Tomiki Aikido. I have seen it used successfully in street encounters (students & instructors that were cops) It would help in timing & distance in MMA a great deal, but it would take at least a year to notice any benefit ( for MMA ) and thus might be frustrating for you. Also 90% of the time I've seen aikido used effectively it looks NOTHING like what happens in class or in a Segal movie. It's usually pretty funny, but hey if it works it's OK for the street, but I generally suggest the young, fit, and strong try something else.

What does "practical" mean really? You know I've been trying to decide if I want to get back into krav Maga or start in Aikido. I've done boxing, Taekwon do, Okinawin Gogiu ryu (spelling) and a little JKD and some grappeling, been in sports most of my younger life and stay extremely fit all the time, Followed MA all my life. I can defend myself but it's not about that. In all my research on what I want to do next, I see tons on MA'tist who say this art or that art is not affective in a "street fight" or in "real life" situations! Or, and I read this " I've studied Aikido for 15 yrears and love it but...it's really not effective in a real fight". But NO ONE, in anything that I have found has ever said exactly how many fights they have been in in say...the last 15 years, to say that it is NOT effective! The art is going to be there BUT it is ONLY going to be as effective as the practitioner using it. I have seen personally people in my classes that were higher ranking than myself that would not stand a chance outside of the controlled setting, people who just can't think that fast or improvise when needed. It really doesn't matter what belt you are, if you don't have confidence you "YOU" then you're going to lose in a sticky situation, it's that simple, the "ART" in itself is not going to save you. Look at Lyota Machida, he grew up with Karate and is walking through MMA'rs! But, if he just stuck to the kata's it probably wouldn't be that way, he adapted it to fit what he needed it too and it's working, a strict japanese art toasting opponents skilled in multiple arts. To me the key is to be a "Martial Artist" not a martial art! Oh by the way I'm new on here, thanks for listening.Originally posted by mea140 View PostI was thinking about taking Aikido and was told by several people that it is b.s. Ive been grappling since I could walk so I thiught it was a good time to try something new. Is Aikido a practical martial art for MMA? Could I incorporate it bjj and wrestling.

You can incorporate aspects of anything with anything else (generally speaking).
You don't need to have a sword in your hand every moment to practice/use Aikido.
You can grapple with a sword in your hand.
But I get your point.

I do appreciate this acknowledgement. Wonder if this person would be better off by just going to one of these new MMA gyms and concentrate, for 6 monghs to 1 year, on 2 punches, a shoot, a triangle, a rear-naked choke and a roundhouse kick? Thats about all it takes to be successfull in MMA anyway. In a Koryu or Budo, it takes 10 years to a lifetime.Originally posted by jubaji View PostBut I get your point.

With the caveat that this person was a blackbelt before he was attack the first time, this gentleman said that his Aikido actually worked the very first time he was attacked by 3 bullies. Lots of broken fingers was one result. I tried him to see how good he really is and was definately impressed. To say that Aikido is useless is to say that Jujitsu and Judo is useless. Parts of the same battlefield arts.Originally posted by blanker View Postlol i missed a 1 out there 1 out of 100 times

Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves. Albert Einstein
When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity.
