I've got a mate who does Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu, and full heartedly believes it's effective, but says he could never spar with me because "of the nature of the moves", that if he spars with me he'll break my arms and the like. Now, I've heard the old "No, we can't full contact spar because if we do, people die" stuff from other people, then seen them get the shit beat out of them in a real fight. Is Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu any different? What are your opinions?

any martial art is only as good as the person that is using it. if the person isnt good at the MA, then it does not mean that the MA is ineffective, it means he is ineffective. if he is good and what he does, than his art will be effective. the only problem is that you do not know how good he actually is. and maybe thats the beauty of the martial arts. there can be belt ranks sure, or sashes or whatever. but you must remember, there are 50 year olds who are getting blackbelts for the first time, even though they have been practicing it for 30 years. there are 6 year olds who are running around with black belts also, who have been doing it for 3 years. the beauty of the martial arts is the suspense. you dont know how good he actually is, so whatever decision you guys make whether to spar or not, may be for you own good, or him just trying to save his own butt from getting beat up by you.

Personally I don't believe that shit when people say things like they can't spar you because they would hurt you.....It's not like you are going to stand still and let them pop your shoulder or break your neck are you??!!!
BTW full contact sparring is dangerous in any style....but also rewarding if you don't get too hurt!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Like, sparing trains your reflexes to to act in a real situation. If you don't spar, you're not going to beable to do it in a real fight. And as for his techniques being "too dangereous", it's all about control. I don't get it, I'v bee trying to tell this guy "Yeah, I'm sure you could break someone's arm with this move, but a BJJ guy could break my arm with a basic armbar, but he doesn't want to break my arm, he just wants me to submit, so he'll apply the right amount of pressure to get what he wants without snapping me". Like in Kyokushin, you spar with Black Belts straight away, and they could knock me on my arse within seconds, but they don't, they just push you out of your comfort zone and try to get you to improve yourself.
Gar - it's just frustrating because he's cocky about Aikijujutsu

If he's cocky then he's asking for trouble....and if he can't back his claims up then he's getting himself into deeper shit.
This sort of attitude happens so much in MA's it's a serious problem. People will train in a style for x amount of years, never cross train, always work with willing opponents, never spar hard (by that I mean under pressure), never get taken out of their comfort zone and they turn around and say to you "I can't spar you because I would kill you". Or they think they are some type of invincible weapon that cannot be defeated and they constantly put down other fighters/styles and their practitioners if they don't fit into their image of decent Martial Artist. There is heaps of these people around. They are not exclusively male, many are female, and they come in all shapes, sizes and ages. When you find one, if they are unwilling to prove themselves or back up their claims then they should be treated with great suspicion as they are probably a joke.
You're correct about sparring. You have to do it when you train if you want to learn to react under pressure. You have to be pushed and you have to be tested to improve yourself in the MA's or for if you want to defend yourself appropriately. Aikijujutsu/Hapkido are good styles (when trained properly) and, just like BJJ, most locking/armbar/choke technique can be controlled to the point that you know you are applying painful pressure so you know you have someone under control. You don't have to snap their limbs just because you can!!
Personally I think this guy is too scared to spar you.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaar - OK - I've given up on this guy. He just told me that "even if I was a 10th dan in BJJ, I wouldn't ever try to take it to the ground, it's just to risky. You're an idiot if you go to the ground". I'm a striker, and I have a alot fo respect for ground fighters.
But yeah - he was telling me how their class was run - the closest they come to "sparring" is performing moves with non-resisting partners. Like - each to their own, if you're doing a martial art not neccersarily for SD, then yeah, that's be a good thing and I'm sure you'd enjoy it, but he always goes on about how deadly it is, and is also reeeally critical of UFC fighters. Meh, he's a n00b. I'm sure Aikijujutsu in a decent dojo would be an excelent MA, but I'm not going to his.

He's an idiot.
How long has he been training for and does that qualify him to have such extreme opinions on BJJ and ground fighting and the UFC??
He does "non-resisting" sparring yet he's doing a self defence style?? How does that work?? If you get into a fight what are the chances your opponent is going to be "non-resisting" unless they are a baby??
All I can say is don't judge the art in this case, judge the training. This guy is obviously a twat.
