Good practice to absorb the usefull bits from your encounter. You realize you would have had trouble with a description of this guy. Might not even recognize him if you saw him again? (kinda thing) With fixation on the blade and his stature it's difficult to REMEMBER any detail outside the tunnel vision focused on the weapon...
What do you think you could do better next time?
I try to look at the feet and hips. I can usually say if he had boots or shoes and what color they were. If his pants were typical jeans and if he was also wearing a jacket. (color, style???) etc... Height, build and hair color are good details to recall as well as his eye color if you can see past the dark glasses.

I don't think I could do that one any better. Keeping my eye on the blade seemed to be the best thing. Getting out without being stabbed or slashed or ending up in jail myself. If you were my instructor, what would you suggest?

Hardball, you're story reminds me of one my dad told me once when i asked about a tiny scar on his side around his lowermost ribs. He was in a phone booth when this little weasly guy who was clearly tweaking on something put a knife to his side and asked for his wallet. My dad judged at the moment from the guy's demeanor that he was about to snap, and was afraid to even take the time fumbling for his cash. Being that the guy was pretty short he was at convenient elbowing height for my 6'5" dad, which my dad took advantage of, knocking him out with an elbow to the head! my dad then looked around and strolled off, not wanting to deal with the cops
he still doesn't know if the knife penetrated his jacket when he turned to elbow the guy or if it happened sooner and he just didn't feel it because of adrenaline.

We were drilled to recall details like height, weight, clothing, hair color, etc...
Info the police could use to find the suspect later.
Next time say "BOO!" when you walk past him... LOL

I was taking a lunchtime walk on a rather quiet street here in baltimore. I normally walk about an hour but today it was almost 90 minutes. Get this, I'm walking and another guy is walking towards me. I see him reach in his pocket for what I thought was a gun. He comes out with a very sharp folding knife and pops it open with that snapping wrist motion that some people mistake for a switch blade. I train with training knives all the time so my first reaction was to keep a cool calm head and just keep moving. I think the poor guys timing was off and he pulled it sooner that he wanted to. So, I keep moving and in my typical paranoid fashion I check over my shoulder. Damn, get this--he is checking over his shoulder at me. So I just keep moving trying to get as much distance as possible between us, but still checking over my shoulder. Get this, the guy is still checking over his shoulder. Finally, I knew I was out of harms way because of the distance; but I am now perplexed. What the F&^%k was that all about? Maybe he wanted to attack me but couldn't get up the courage? Maybe he was intimidated by my size? I don't know but, I do know this--it pays to be alert and it pays to check over your shoulder every so often. EDIT: Not a word was spoken by either one of us.
